Thurs Feb 13th Objectives: 1. Identify and describe the political organization of France under Louis XVI Analyze the economic crisis that created political doubt in the French Monarchy Describe the relationship between the Three Estates in France prior to the Revolution Discussion: What are some strategies that leaders who are threatened with the possibility of revolution use to try to stop it?

3 Who had the Power & Control in France? Louis XVI & Marie-Antoinette
Crowned king after Louis XV’s death in 1774 Although intelligent and good-natured, Louis & Marie were seen as weak, indecisive, shy and awkward Married at ages 14 & 15

4 The Three Estates of France
1st Estate – Catholic Clergy - 1 % of population / Pays no taxes 2nd Estate – Nobles - 2 % of pop. / Pays little taxes 3rd Estate – Commoners Working Middle Class 97 % of population Heavily taxed by King All estates are represented in the government by forming a Parliament-like committee known as the Estates General

5 The Meeting of the Estates General
When France is nearing bankruptcy, King Louis decides to obtain money by implementing more taxes What Estate is he going to try and tax? The First and Second Estate were outraged and refused Calls forth the Meeting of the Estates General

6 The Number of Representatives in the Estates General: Vote by Head!
300 seats – 1 Vote Catholic Clergy 1st Estate 300 – 1 Vote Nobles 2nd Estate Commoners 648 Seats - 1 Vote Who benefits from this voting system? Who is hurt by it?

7 Convening the Estates General - May, 1789
Last time it was called into session was 1614!

8 Revolution is brewing…
The Third Estate has specific complaints: 1. Economic Problems such as inflation, high prices, unbearable taxes 2. Richer Half of the Middle Class wanted political power to match their economic contributions 3. Everyone wanted liberty and freedom 4. King Louis and Marie Antoinette are despised for their extravagant and lavish taste

9 Power to the People… 3rd Estate insisted on change withdrew themselves from Estates General declared themselves the National Assembly Every delegate would get a vote Invited the other estates to join them How do you think the other two states reacted to this desired change?

10 Tennis Court Oath The new National Assembly arrived in the assembly hall the next day to find the door locked They broke down the door to a recreation room in the Palace of Versailles Tennis Court Oath 3rd Estate vowed not to stop until there was change and vowed to create a new constitution
