2 SOUTH AMERICA The land of South America looks very much like that of North America.

3 Cordillera A mountain system made up of parallel ranges
The Andes Mountains form Earth’s largest mountain range.

4 Escarpment A steep slope between a high surface and a low surface

Patagonia – dry as a result of rain shadow Atacama desert – one of the driest places on Earth

7 El Nino An ocean and weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean in which ocean waters become warmer

8 Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air

9 Transportation Corridor
A route by which people and goods move from one place to another

10 Estuary A partially enclosed body of water in which salty sea water and fresh water mix

12 RESOURCES IN SOUTH AMERICA
Four-fifths of South America’s land could be used for farming. Only one-third is used for farming.

13 Sharecropping A system of working the land, in which the worker was paid with a “share” of the crop

14 Factors of Production The human, capital, and natural resources needed for industry and business

15 MANUFACTURING Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Venezuela are the leading manufacturing countries in South America. These countries have natural and human resources available. They have copper, iron ore, lead, tin, and fossil fuels. They have fertile soil and water based transportation. They have large populations of people to work.
