Think about your actions before you do anything. Are you ready to become a parent? Remember that abstinence is the only 100% effective method of contraception. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE!

Contraceptives- Methods used to prevent conception. (pregnancy) The methods are categorized as barrier, hormonal or permanent. You also need to know the failure ratings of each method. These rates are measured for perfect use situations, but real users make mistakes.

Before choosing a method, you need to consider the following: Your overall health How often you have sex The number of partners you have If you want to have children someday The failure rates of each method Possible side effects You and your partner’s comfort level with using the method The cost of each method

The method most teens use is the Pull and Pray Method This method has a high failure rate, based on 100 expected pregnancies, 90 women will become pregnant using this method It takes a lot of male self-control. Even if the male pulls the penis out before ejaculation, there are sperm present due to the cowpers glands.

Barrier methods- Put up a block, or barrier, to keep sperm from reaching the egg. The Today Sponge— contains a spermicidal that kills sperm. It is put in up to 24 hours before sex and left in for 6 hours after. Failure rate is 16-32.

Spermicides Jellies, Foams, Creams, Suppositories, Films These products are put into the vagina and will kill sperm that are ejaculated or present. They are more effective if used with another barrier such as the diaphragm. 30 Pregnancies if used alone

Diaphragm, cervical cap, cervical shield These barriers block sperm from entering the cervix. A spermicide is applied and then they are placed into the vagina next to the cervix. They must be left in place for 6-8 hours after. 15 pregnancies 17-23 pregnancies

Female Condom This is worn by the female inside the vagina. It lines the vagina and keeps the sperm from crossing into the cervix to reach the egg. It is inserted 8 hours prior to sex. Failure rate of 20 pregnancies

Male Condom Thin latex, polyurethane or natural/lamb skin. Can be non-lubricated or lubricated. Must have spermicide to be effective against pregnancy. Cannot use petroleum jelly for lubrication it weakens the condom. Don’t keep them in your wallet or glove box as heat breaks down the condom causing breakage. 2 is NOT better than 1 For the avid hunter Pick your color! READ THE DIRECTIONS!!!!!! 11-16 Pregnancies

Hormonal methods — Prevent pregnancy by interfering with ovulation, fertilization, and/or implantation of the egg Oral Contraceptives, (The Pill) These contain estrogen and progestin. Taken daily to prevent the ovary from releasing an egg. It also causes changes in the lining of the uterus to prevent the sperm from joining the egg. There are a variety of prescriptions. Some are monthly, some are four month Risks include blood clots. Smoking increases the risks 5 Pregnancies

Emergency Contraception “The morning after pill” or “Plan B” Should not be used as regular birth control Has to be give within 72 hours of unprotected sex, or failed protection, (the condom breaks) 1 pregnancy

A thin tube is used to thread a tiny spring-like device through the vagina and uterus into the fallopian tube. Scar tissue forms around the coil blocking the fallopian tubes and stopping the union of the sperm and egg. Less than 1 pregnancy

Surgical Sterilization For the females it’s called a tubal ligation. Cutting, tying, or sealing the fallopian tubes to prevent the egg and sperm from uniting. Less than 1 pregnancy
