2 Rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber. It is made from purified cellulose, primarily from wood pulp, which is chemically converted into a soluble compound. Regardless of whether wood pulp or cotton linters are used, the basic raw material for making rayon must be processed in order to extract and purify the cellulose. The resulting sheets of white, purified cellulose are then treated to form regenerated cellulose filaments. These filaments are spun into yarns and eventually made into the desired fabric. The first step in the manufacturing process is processing the purified cellulose by steeping it in sodium hydroxide, that produces sheets of alkali cellulose, the sheets are dried and shredded and then aged in metal container's for 2 to 3 days; after ageing, the crumbs are combined and churned with liquid carbon disulfide which turns the mix into orange colored crumbs, any dyes are then added and stored in vats to age The viscose solution is turned in to strings of fibers, if fiber filament is being produced then a spinneret with smaller holes is used to solidify the filaments After being bathed in acid the filaments are ready to be spun into yarn. The filaments are first stretched under controlled tension on to a series of offsetting rollers, then their put into a rapidly spinning cylinder resulting in a cake like string that sticks to the sides of the cylinder, the strings are then washed, bleached rinsed, dried, and wound on cones or spools, once the fibers are sufficiently cured, they are ready for post treatment chemicals and the various weaving processes necessary to produces the fabric

3 Disadvantages Rayon, especially the dry clean only types, is very vulnerable to permanent stains, bleach, drinks, and even sweat can damage the fabrics appearance Rayon wrinkles very easily, you have to iron it after every time you wear it, but iron it inside out to avoid damage to the fabric Caring for rayon fabrics can be confusing because they can come in both dry clean only or washable versions, washing dry clean only fabrics can lead to shrinkage and fading, Rayon has only 30 to 70 percent of its usual strength when it's wet, making it vulnerable to tearing as its agitated in the washer and tumbled in the dryer. Advantages Rayon is moisture absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, and easily dyed into vivid colors Rayon is able to versatile and able to blend easily with many fibers

4 Rayon fibers are used in the apparel industry to make blouses, dresses, jackets, scarves, hats, and socks It is also used for furnishings including bedspreads, bed sheets, blankets, curtains, and slipcovers For industrial purposes it is used in feminine hygiene products, towels, and tire cords, medical surgical products, and nonwoven products

5 Fabrics containing rayon can be bleached; some finishes, however, are sensitive to chlorine bleach. Use warm or cool suds. Gently squeeze suds through fabric and rinse in warm water. Do not wring or twist the piece. Smooth or shake out the clothing piece and place on a non-rust hanger to dry. Rayon sweaters should be dried flat. Press the clothing while damp on the wrong side with the iron at a moderate setting. If finishing on the right side is required, a press cloth should be used. Between wearing's, rayon pieces may be pressed with a cool iron.
