1 Dolphin Sea Mammal By: MMD

2 Species The scientific name for dolphins is Tursiops Truncatus
Bottlenose dolphins are mammals Bottlenose dolphins belong to the group of animals scientist call cetaceans

3 Physical Features Bottlenose dolphins: A gray, smooth skin
Long, fish-shape, like a shark 2 to 4 meters long Weigh between 440 and 600 pounds two flippers on the side of their bodies a fluke, which is a big tail (like a small whale’s tail) A flipper at the top of there head called a dorsal Two eyes on the side of their head a mouth that looks almost like a snout or beak They have a little hole at the top of their head

4 Habitat & Climate They live in warm temperature Oceans
When it is winter they swim to the bottom of the ocean where it is cooler Most swim in the warm seas You won’t find dolphins in arctic water Dolphins live in the Atlantic Ocean While dolphins do not migrate in the summer they tend to move locations due to the water

5 Life Span/Endangered Some dolphins live 25 to 30 years
Bottlenose dolphins live 30 to 50 years Some can live almost hundred years Dolphins are not in danger, but some people eat Bottlenose Dolphins

6 What They Eat A Bottlenose dolphin is a carnivore
They are really big meat eaters They mostly eat fish, such as malluses and small fish But they also eat squid and crab

7 Behavior Bottlenose dolphins are well known for their agility
They are very playful because they are really friendly They are wildlife watchers, which means they swim around the ocean paying attention to what’s going on around them. They leap out of the water They are fast swimmers They live in a pod with other dolphins They are social mammals

8 Reproduction Young Dolphins are called calves
The calves grow in their mothers’ tummies like us The babies stay with there mothers for a long time, until they are full grown Babies dolphins stay in their mom’s tummies for a year before there born Female dolphins give birth every two to three years

9 Physical Adaptations Bottlenose Dolphins have a body that is round and robust, this helps protect them because they are big They have a short snout which helps them protect themselves by ramming it into predators They have small holes at the side of there head that is their ears Bottlenose dolphins have a fin at the top of there head called a dorsal fin and two fins at the side and a fin at the top called a fluke

10 Physiological Adaptations
Bottlenose dolphins are warm blooded animals which keeps them warm in cold waters Their temperature inside their body is 36 degrees. To keep this temperature, they have a thick layer of fat called blubber just below the skin.

11 Behavioral Adaptations
Dolphins jump out of the water to breath They use echolocation to find their food Dolphins mostly live in groups with their family which helps them stay safe because there are so many of them.

12 Interesting Facts Bottlenose dolphins use echolocation to find their food Bottlenose dolphins can swim up to 260 meters below surface of the ocean Dolphins spend about 33 percent of each day sleeping Dolphins can swim up to25 miles per hour Baby dolphins stay in there moms tummies for a year before there born
