1 Greek City-States - Sparta Lived in South Greece – Peloponnesus. Brutal system of control. Government – 2 Kings, Council of Elders, Assembly of citizens (Male,native,over 30). Also 5 Ephors who ran day-to-day operations. Military – Prepared as children. Age 7-start training, live in barracks. Brutal training but excellent soldiers. After 30 could move into the Assembly.

2 Greek City-States - Sparta Women – Rigorous upbringing –produce healthy babies – strengthen bodies. Must obey father or husbands. Could inherit property – managed household. Spartans – Looked down on trade/wealth. Also Forbade travel and the use of new art/ideas.

3 Greek City-States - Athens Monarchy moves to Aristocracy moves to Democracy. ** People (ordinary) were discontent and argued for more rights. Final move to Democracy – Government by the people.*

4 Greek City-States - Athens SOLON – 594 B.C. Wise leader who was able to make multiple reforms. Outlawed debt slavery & freed those who were already in debt slavery. Offered citizenship to foreigners. Created an Athenian Assembly. Economic Reforms – export good helped farmers and merchants.

5 Greek City-States - Athens Rise of Tyrants –faced with more discontent, some took power by force. Pisistratus – 546 – helped farmers with loans. Building projects gave jobs to poor. Cleisthenes – 507 – Council of 500 – prepared laws for the Assembly and handled the day-today operations. Laws sent to the Legislature.

6 Greek City-States - Athens Women – No Role in Public Life. Job was to manage the household Education – Not for girls, just for Boys that could afford it. Reading, writing, music, military and public speaking. Forces of Unity – Religion Language View of outsiders (barbarians)
