1 Christianity in England survived the Dark Ages, and gradually the whole country was united and living peacefully living as Catholics, under some very good and holy Kings. Then this man became King. Who is he? Write down 3 facts about him. To define the key terms. (L3) To explain how the church became divided in England (L4) To explain why some Catholics would rather have been killed than swear allegiance to the King. (L5)

2 I Create the Church of England ! We’re not Catholic anymore ! Then I can make the decisions and allow myself to divorce !! The 1500’s…what happened ? Henry VIII The Pope Use the pictures to explain what Henry’s problem was and what he did when the Pope didn’t allow Henry VIII to divorce his first wife. mmm… new wife..! No way !! Henry VIII was already married to Catherine of Aragon. Later, however, he wanted to marry Ann Boleyn. The Pope would not allow him to divorce. Henry was very angry, and decided that in that case, he would stop listening to the Pope, and become head of the Church in England himself. He gave himself the special title of “Supreme Head of the Church”. **Was he right set up his own Church in order to get his divorce?

5 St Thomas More was the King’s main advisor. He couuld not accept having to follow the King for his faith. His conscience told him that the right thing to do, was to stand up to the King. Standing up to the King

7 More did not think that the King had the right to call himself Head of the Church - he believed only Popes, were the successors of the Apostles, and only Popes could claim to rule the Church. He resigned his job as advisor to the King. The King did not appreciate his loyalty to the Pope, and he was was imprisoned in the Tower of London, then executed. “I die the king's faithful servant, but God's first.” said More, at his execution. What do you think he meant? 1.Why was Thomas More put to death? 2.Explain why More thought it was wrong for the King to make himself Head of the Church. **Do you think More was right not to accept the King as Head of the Church? Standing up to the King

8 Because of Henry VIII, England became divided between secret Catholics, and Protestants who followed the King. Catholics (stay loyal to the Pope) Dangerous! Anglicans (follow King Henry VIII) What would you have done? Why?
