Nazi Camp System

Prisoners of the Camp Prisoners were required to wear color-coded triangles on their jackets and letters so that the guards of the camps could easily identify each person's background and turn different groups against each other. The captured Soviet soldiers worked as forced laborers, and many of the prisoners of war died because they were executed or badly mistreated by the Germans. Political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals were sent to concentration camps as punishment.

“Enemies of the State” --Jews were not only the ones being prosecuted. Other people who were considered “undesirable” or “enemies of the state”. --Some of the people that were targeted were Gypsies, who were known as racial inferiors. The Gypsies were forced to live in special camps underground guarded by the police. - -Jehovah’s Witnesses were victimized because of their beliefs. Their beliefs prohibited them from joining the army or saluting the flag. They were forced to join the Jews in the concentration camps.

Forced Labor After German’s defeat in the battle of Stalingrad in 1942- 1943, they didn’t have enough labor workers. The Jews were drafted for forced labor to clear war damage and repair roads. Germans forced labor for Jewish men between the ages of 14 and 60 in Poland. Later the Jewish women and children from ages 12 to 14 were also required to perform forced labor. Jews worked 10 to 12 hour days under harsh conditions, receiving very little or no pay.

Liberation Germans had been forced to leave these prisoners behind in their hasty retreat from the camp Soviet soldiers were the first to liberate concentration camp prisoners in the final stages of the war. Survivors had many different reactions to their freedom. Some were jubliant to get reaquianted with other family members. Others felt guilty for surviving when so many others had died and they had not.

The Nuremberg Trials Nuremberg, Germany was chosen to hold trials. The crimes committed during the Holocaust were brought to trial. The Nazi trials, most of them, were in Germany and many other countries.

Death Marches Prisoners were forced to walk long distances with little to no food! The largest Death Marches took place in the winter of 1944-1945. About 1 out of 4 people died during on the way. On the 10th day of the march 700 people were murdered. Those who were still alive when the march was over were driven in the ocean and shot. In January 18, 1945 was the worst Death Marches of all time. 60,000 people were sent to march.
