Do Now Please write down the following question and then answer it. Do you think the Industrial Revolution was ultimately a good thing or a bad thing? Explain What is / was the impact of the Industrial Revolution?

Tonight’s homework Read 729 to 732 (MUST take notes and part of your notes will be the terms in blue bold print)

Quick review 1. What role did children and women play in the new society? Answer - children and women were often hired in place of men because they were cheaper. 2. Name one of the negatives of the Industrial Revolution? Answer - Life expectancy was shorter than in the country. People lack proper housing, heat, food, sanitation. The building were often dangerous. The streets were open sewers. And finally, long work days and workers worked 6 days a week.

New Stuff There were many positives effects of the Industrial Revolution too. 1. Created new jobs and allowed farmers to earn more consistent chance for work. 2. Contributed to the wealth of a nation 3. Created technological advancements (steam engines, the Cotton Gin, Steam Locomotive) 4. It gave many the chance to improve their life.

New Stuff The middle and upper classes benefited from the various advancements. For the working class, it took a lot longer but their lives did eventually improve. The workers got shorter hours, better work conditions, and better pay. The Manchester Mills were a prime example of how one groups’ struggles and misery would allow another group to profit. The streets were filthy and the conditions were harsh.

New Stuff The owners on the other hand, built luxury houses on the edge of town. The children would work next to or near their parents. The supervisors would freely beat the children in order for them to be as productive as adults.

New Stuff The Industrial Revolution spreads to the United States. Unlike England, America’s resources were untapped and far more vast and there was a smaller population which allowed for better wages. England feared the United States. The British forbade engineers, toolmakers and certain laborers from leaving the country. Also, during the War of 1812, the British blockaded the US ports to stop international trade and hopefully force the US into financial ruin.

New Stuff Before the war, in 1798, Samuel Slater emigrated (left his country) to the US. He built a spinning machine based on an English design he saw while back in England. He joined Moses Brown, to build a factory in Pawtucket RI. The factory mass produced thread. By 1813, Francis Cabot Lowell of Boston, aided with investors (people willing to give money to support this new company) revolutionized the textile industry. The company was in Waltham, Mass. They eventually started others. One in current day Lowell Massachusetts, named in his honor.
