2 Format This part has 30 items You will hear a question followed by three possible responses (Answers).

3 Example Of An Item One Question: What color is your new car? Followed by 3 responses: A) I bought a sports car. B) New cars are expensive. C) It’s bright blue.

4 Question: What color is your new car? Correct answer: C) It’s bright blue

5 Tactics There is very little time between items. Make your decision before the next item begins. Try to identify the type of question. The response will depend on what type it is.

6 Tactics Concentrate on the audio program. There is nothing to consider in the test book. Listen to all three responses before you mark your answer. If you don’t know the answer, guess.

7 Different types of questions for Part Two

8 Information/Wh Questions Nearly half of the questions in part two are information questions. These questions ask for specific pieces of information. Questions with what...? and how..? are the most common.

9 The WH - Questions 1. What... ?2. How.. ? 3. When... ?4. Where. ? 5. Why... ?6. Who.. ? 7. Whose.. ?8. Which. ?

10 Examples Of Information Questions. What do you think of the plan to open an office in Busan? A) I’ll leave the office open. B) I think it’s a great idea. C) I’m going next month.

12 Yes or No Questions Nearly 25% of the questions fall under this category. Questions start with auxiliary verbs (do, are, has, ……). Or questions start with a form of the main verb be (is, are, was, and were).

13 Examples of Yes or No Questions Auxiliary verb examples  Do you know where Bob is?  Has the pizza been ordered?  Should we stop and ask someone?  Can we stop at the next gas station?

14 Examples of Yes or No Questions The main verb be  Is there any pasta left?  Are you coming over tonight?  Was someone trying to call me?  Were you going to tell someone about him?

15 Types of Answers Responses may be short answers or full sentences. They are often not simple “Yes, I do.” Or “No, I don’t”. They can be affirmative, negative, or neutral with a large range between them.

16 Question: Has Tom finished the project? Possible Affirmative Responses  I think so.  Of course he has.  Yes, he finished this morning.  I believe he has.  Sure, he works fast.

17 Question: Has Tom finished the project? Possible Negative Responses  No, I don’t think he has.  Not yet, but he is working at it.  No, but he’ll be finished soon.  No, he gave up on it.  No, he’s doing something else.

18 Question: Has Tom finished the project? Possible Neutral Responses  I have no idea.  Why don’t you ask him?  Maybe.  Perhaps.  I’m not sure.

19 Other types of Questions These questions account for about 25% of the items. They are varied but can be broken down into the following categories: - Embedded Questions - Negative Questions - Tag Questions

20 Embedded Questions An embedded question is a part of a sentence that would be a question if it were on its own, but is not a question in the context of the sentence.

21 Examples Embedded Questions Do you know…? Do you think…? Did you decide? Did you hear…? Are you sure…? Did anyone tell you…? Have you heard…? Can you tell me…? Will you let me know…?

22 Examples Of An Embedded Question Question: Do you know if Mr. Patterson is gone home? Responses: A) He has a great home. B) Mr. Patterson works here. C) I believe he has?

23 Examples Of An Embedded Question Question: Do you know if Mr. Patterson is gone home? Correct response: C) I believe he has?

24 Negative Questions Negative questions begin with negative contractions: Doesn’t….., Hasn’t……, Aren’t…… The expected answer is affirmative, but the actual answer may be affirmative or negative.

25 Examples Of Negative Questions Q1: Isn’t this a great painting? A1: It certainly is. Q2: Won’t you come over for dinner? A2: Sure, I’d love to.

26 Tag Questions Tag questions consist of an affirmative statement with a negative tag. Or a negative statement with an affirmative tag.

27 Affirmative statement with a negative tag Examples: Q1: This is a beautiful car, isn’t it? A1: It really is. Q2: You enjoyed lunch, didn’t you? A2: Not really, it was too salty.

28 Negative statement with an affirmative tag Examples: Q1 This won’t take long, will it? A1: Just a few minutes. Q2: He didn’t sleep in, did he? A2: No, he’ll be here on time.
