Welcome! 5 th grade Open House

Our School Day Our first class officially begins at 8:15—HOWEVER, students are brought into the classroom at 8:00. **Please make sure your child is here on time! If not, they are missing valuable time in class!* If your child arrives after 8:15, he/she will be marked as tardy. Students should be here by 7:50 if they are eating breakfast. Do not drop off children before 7:35—There is no one on duty to supervise until that time.

Early Dismissals and Absences If at all possible, please try to limit early dismissals. It is difficult to get your child caught up and key instructional time is lost. If your child is absent, please send an excuse for them on the day that they return. If your child is absent multiple days, it would be helpful to come by and get your child’s work.

LIONS THAT ROAR All students are expected to show exemplary ‘Lions That ROAR’ behavior at all times. R – Respectful O – On task A – Always prepared R – Responsible This is a component of our PBIS system. REFER TO STUDENT/PAR ENT HANDBOOK.

PBIS PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) is a school wide system that provides a common purpose and approach to behavior and discipline. 6 th year as a PBIS school—Students will continue PBIS at the middle school. Our expectations are taught at the beginning of the year and retaught as needed School-wide expectations are posted around the school and are also given to the students in the form of a *matrix* that is to be kept in their folder.

PBIS Students are expected to follow all expectations and behavior is tracked on the behavior chart. When a student receives 3 marks on the behavior chart in one day, they are required to complete a *reflection* form about their behavior. This form is then sent home for the parent to sign.

PBIS Consequences Students may lose their monthly PBIS reward for: 3 reflections in one month 1 office referral 2 parent contacts 15 marks on the behavior chart

PBIS Rewards Students are rewarded for positive behavior with *Lion Loot* and monthly PBIS activities. Lion Loot can be spent in our school store.

Expectations We expect students to come to class prepared! This means having sharpened pencils, notebooks, homework, and any other materials that they may need. We expect all students to be on task, participating, paying attention, and putting forth 100% effort EVERY DAY!

Student Planners The planner is used not only for your child to write down HW, but as a form of communication between school and home. It is your child’s responsibility to write their HW down in their planner each day and it is YOUR responsibility as a parent to check HW and sign the planner daily.

HOMEWORK The 5 th grade teachers give HW Monday – Thursday. There is usually written HW, notes to study., and to read. Many 5 th graders think that ‘study’ or ‘read’ means ‘no HW’. Please make sure that your child is reviewing their notes every day so that they will be prepared when test time comes.

HOMEWORK Please check to make sure your child is completing homework. The consequence of incomplete homework is the same as having no homework. Starting the 2 nd 9 weeks, students will be given a homework grade in each subject. They will start with 100, and each missing assignment results in a 5 point deduction.

MATH IMMEDIATE RECALL OF MULTIPLICATION FACTS IS CRUCIAL FOR SUCCESS IN 5 TH GRADE MATH!! Some students’ math grades are currently reflecting lack of recall of their facts.

READING Research shows that children who read or are read to at home have a higher success rate in school. Make sure your child is reading every night, and even on the weekends!

Recess Detention This year, we have recess detention for students who have not completed HW, classwork, or have not followed our behavior expectations. If your child goes to detention, you will receive a note stating why that will need to be signed and returned the next day.

Accelerated Reader AR will be implemented again this year. Each student will have an individual reading goal based on his/her ability and will receive monthly incentives for reaching this goal.

Read To Succeed The ‘Read to Succeed’ law was signed by Governor Haley last June. As a result of this legislation, we have a school- wide focus on literacy again this year. This law requires each district and school to develop a reading plan and requires each elementary school to have a reading coach. Mr. Al Gambrell is with us again this year!

Read To Succeed The school will provide interventions for struggling readers through the SST program as well as reading groups within the classrooms. All elementary teachers are required to take 4 graduate level reading classes in order to become more effective in the classroom.

PTO PTO is asking that every child bring $5 to cover costs for classroom parties this year. Parents will not be asked to provide items for parties. Students will receive cupcakes, chips, drinks, and other special treats with these funds.

Parent Portal/Signed Papers We encourage you all to use Parent Portal to access your child’s grades. If you have not signed up, please see Mrs. Audrey Riley in the guidance office. Signed papers will continue to come home. Please sign and return the next day.
