Recruitment Workshop The Do’s and Don’ts of Recruiting Beta Upsilon Chapter Last Updated: June 2012

Do’s Offer the scholarship to incoming freshmen and incoming transfers. Tell them that they do not have to be apart of the fraternity to sign up. This is open to all that meet the requirements of the scholarship. Remember to have a couple of the applications on hand when tabling but always have at least one on the table and when we run out, get their emails so you can contact them later. (A way of recruiting)

Do’s (Con’t) When tabling… – Always have enough brochures, always have a paddle, a poster board, composite picture, our philanthropy, and photo album. – Always go up to people but always have something to talk about. For example, if we are having any types of events coming up or there are wearing some jersey you like. (Easy ways to make conversation)

Do’s (Con’t) Attend the Buzz Attend the Step Greek Panel (Make sure to get in contact when step is there) Usually the tabling for step is first week of August. Bienvenida (Make sure to RSVP for this)

Do’s (Con’t) Explain to them we do not RUSH. We are one of the only organizations that does not rush. RUSHing does not make sense because you are literally rushing into a fraternity. Explain the Interest Packet/ Interest Group (and the purpose for why we do this) ie. To see what kind of things they would be doing if they were to become a brother and if its something they’d be willing to commit to after they cross. Also it is for them to get to know us as we get to know them during the packet. (A way to get your feet wet ) Make sure to tell them that the interest packet is not a commitment and they do not have to sign anything or pay anything if they are in the interest packet.

Do’s (Con’t) Encourage to go look at other organizations to see what fits them. Respect other organizations. Make sure to hang out with the interests as much as you can. Do not necessarily talk about the fraternity but just try to find stuff you have in common with them or if they have something in common with another brother, mention it. (Slick way of recruiting)

Do’s (Con’t) Actually sound interested in them. Ask where they are from What they like to do on their free time Major Simple questions

Do’s (Con’t) If you plan to present at an information, please practice beforehand so you actually know the information and do not be scared to ask another brother for or constructive criticism.

Don’ts Never say we are the best Never talk down on other organizations Do not rush the interest packet Don’t say any information regarding the process. Only stuff regarding the interest packet. If they ask you what the pledging consists of, just tell them that it is confidential and that if they want to be apart of the brotherhood then after they are done with the interest packet, they will find out when they begin pledging.

Don’ts Do not just invite them to parties or to get drunk; invite them to socials, community service events, philanthropy events, Greek events. Do not leave the recruiting just to the recruitment officer. They are already busy as is. They have to get the brochures ready, sign up sheet ready, tabling ready with the secretary, set up the informationals and ask brothers who are able to present.

Frequently Asked Questions How much is it? – It is a fee that can be reduced when we do fundraisers and not to worry about that type of stuff until they finish the packet.

Frequently Asked Questions Do you guys haze? – Us personally, we do not. It is illegal.

Frequently Asked Questions Why did you pick Lambdas over any other organization? – Tell them you reason. For example, I felt more connected with the guys in this fraternity than in any other one. Everyone in this fraternity is so different that we all somehow get along and we all learn from each other. Like I said, look around and make sure you find what you like.

Frequently Asked Questions What makes you guys different than the other fraternities? – First Latino Fraternity in the Nation – We are the only fraternity that Salutes – We have a published book – We have over 120 chapters Nationwide

Frequently Asked Questions We are the first recognized Latino Fraternity recognized by the NIC. What is the NIC? National Inter-Fraternal Council. – What this council, is the mainstream fraternities like Sigma Nu, SAE, etc and they recognized us as being the first Latino Fraternity.
