Engineering and Technology Management Group Group Status Report May 2013

2 Group Leadership - 2012-2013 Director: Allen Arrington Deputy Directors:  Nancy Andersen  Sophia Bright  Abdi Khodadoust Committee Officers Economics – Jairus Hihn / Daniel Nigg History – Cam Martin / Tom Crouch / Peter Young Legal (LA3) – James Rendleman / Doug Marshall Management – Andrea Amram / Tom Irvine Society & Aerospace Tech. – Jarret Lafleur / Brad Steinfeldt / Chris Hearsey Systems Engineering – John Dahlgren / John Eiler / Shirley Brandt Value Driven Design PC – Peter Hollingsworth Changes from last year are in blue.

Highlights TC Health:  Econ TC is up and rolling again with new leadership and a positive direction. Conference Related:  Great support by ETMG at ASM, Space 2012 and CASE 2012.  SATTC and Legal organized the Delta Forum at Space 2012.  TCM organized the Management Roundtable for CASE 2012. Standards:  SETC – AIAA-G-043, Guide for the Preparation of Operational Concepts  SETC – AIAA-G-135, Aerospace Systems Integration Guide Awards:  History has thier bevy of prestigious manuscript awards.  SAT and LA3 – best student paper competition for Space 2012.  TCM supports the Hap Arnold and the Von Braun award. Education:  Econ – Cost and Risk Analysis Workshop  History – Lester Gardner Bibliography  LA3 – Supported two Moot Court activities. Public Policy:  LA3 – ITAR related training and seminars. 3

Success Story: Economics TC Workshop “Cost and Risk Analysis in an Engineering Environment” Hosted by The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 26 March 2013 Background: This workshop was an effort to invigorate the AIAA Economics Technical Committee and provide an event about mid-year between the annual AIAA SPACE Conferences. We surveyed Government and industry representatives and received an overwhelmingly positive response. As a result, we established a one- day program and made arrangements with NASA to hold the event at the Laboratory. 53 attendees very a wide cross section of the industry. One-day agenda included a keynote and 6 panels (agenda provided in back-up). Very successful; lots of interesting in putting on future workshops.  Offers from RAND and the Aerospace Corporation to host future workshops. Sherry Stukes from the Econ TC did “a lot of the heavy lifting” in making this a successful event 4

Upcoming/Ongoing Projects and Proposals 5 History TC: AIAA history topics: Past Presidents. Institutional Archives. TCM – CASE 2013 Executive Workshop. SAT TC: Aerospace Technology Impact Initiative SAT TC: Participating at regional ComicCon in Pittsburgh. Booth supported through TAC funds. SAT TC: YP Experience. Object is to get the young professionals more engaged with TAC and the TCs early. SE and Econ – resuming work on their book proposal.

Key Issues Delta Forum:  ETMG finally decided to end this effort.  Lafleur and Khodadoust did a lot of work to develop a plan to reinvigorate the DF.  In the end, it was decided that the DF had done it’s job and it was time to move on. –The plenary layer of the NEM will continue what the DF started. CASE:  Opportunity for ETM to “own” a conference.  Builds into the integration level of the NEM.  SE, SAT, Econ and Management TC members are key participants. History TC: loss of historic site award program. 6

Opportunities and the Path Forward The ETM TCs have had another great year supporting a variety of activities across the institute. Economics TC is back in action.  Engaged leadership.  Working on several activities. Excellent support from ETM TCs for CASE development.  SETC is an obvious lead for this event.  TCM has taken ownership of the pre-CASE Executive Workshop. PC interactions with the ETMG:  Need to improve communications with VDD PC.  Should the ASI_WG be affiliated with the ETMG? 8
