2 Accommodation & Hospitality Services Carry out fire risk assessments to identify all hazards Consider those people who are especially at risk Eliminate or reduce the risk from fire as far as is reasonably practicable Provide general fire precautions (Training & Drills) Take additional measures to ensure fire safety where flammable or explosive materials are used or stored Create an emergency plan Take reasonable care for your own safety and that of others who may be affected by your activities or omissions Co-operate with your employer in respect of fire safety Inform your employer of any work situation which posed a serious and immediate danger or shortcomings in protection arrangements What Must We Do? 3 Accommodation & Hospitality Services What to do? 1.Use the Break glass and set off the alarm 2.Evacuate the building as quickly as possible 3.Close the doors behind you 4.Stop and collect your belongings 5.Use the lifts 6.Move yourself and others to a safe place (assembly point) 7.Call emergency services (999) 8.Call security (666) 9.Re-enter the building if no signs of smoke 10.Re-enter the building when told to do so by emergency services FIRE

6 Accommodation & Hospitality Services The University owes a special duty of care to: Wheelchair Users Those with hearing, sight and mobility impairment Pregnant women and nursing mothers Young people and children Special consideration is also required for those who do not have English as their first language in terms of communicating the emergency evacuation procedures Specific risks to these groups should be identified and additional control measures implemented where relevant Please be aware of these people in your buildings and reports any concerns you may have to your manager. What are the three sides to the triangle of fire? Having evacuated the workplace after hearing the fire alarm, what immediate action should an employee normally take? A Check for any windows left open. B Report to the assembly point. C Contact the fire brigade. D Alert the occupants of nearby buildings. How will I know and what should I do? Who should be made aware of the emergency evacuation procedures and when? What are the main causes of evacuations? What do we/can we do to reduce these?
