9 Behavior We are on a ticket system We are on a ticket system –Earn tickets –Get a warning before actual consequence of taking away tickets. –Tickets are traded in for goodies at the end of every week. This is why we need Treasure Chest donations! –6 tickets by Friday for 1 item from the Treasure Chest –12 tickets for 2 items, 30 tickets for lunch with a friend, 50 tickets – homework pass –40 tickets - computer time

10 Homework –everyday the homework folder, spelling notebook and agenda will go home, THEN these items should be returned the next school day! –20 minutes every night OF READING…will switch to 30 minutes mid-year –Signing of the agenda each school night –Spelling activity –Study the definitions of vocabulary words…no written work is needed for vocabulary, just spelling. –Math…Kept in the MATH Folder, not HW folder –At times, a project, such as Science or Book report or Book report

11 Bi-Monthly –Every other Monday your child’s work will be sent home with a report that indicates whether your child has been completing assignments, turning in homework, applying positive work efforts, etc. Please sign this report and return it with your child the following day –Please review the work and keep it at home unless otherwise marked as “sign and return” or “correct and return” –Spelling tests will be sent home on Mondays on Mondays

12 Grading System –Papers that have stars, check pluses and smiley faces are fine….one is not better than the other! –Checks or a big “C” in the middle mean that the work was completed and checked, but you may want to look over that paper for mistakes/errors –You will also see a fraction such as 10/12 or just simply -2.

13 Curriculum Spelling Spelling -Research-based program that allows for differentiation among the students to where -Research-based program that allows for differentiation among the students to where they are performing in their spelling ability they are performing in their spelling ability –Weekly spelling test on Friday. –Spelling correctly is for every day writing assignments and for ALL the other words with the same pattern…not just for Friday tests! –Homework: Spelling activities each night of the week…your child needs to turn in written work with his/her name in the upper right- hand corner. –Vocabulary words…responsible for knowing the definitions, not the spelling. However, if the spelling is not copied correctly, it will be counted as wrong on the test.

14 CurriculumMath - Series called Investigations - More hands on, less “paper work” -9:30-10:45 is our math time –We will switch classes after assessments on skills and abilities…begin switching~TBD –Developmentally grouped…based on the work product, current classroom ability, being an independent reader & worker, attention, and focus in a group setting –Groupings have nothing to do with the CogAT (the TD testing) scores and movement will not change based on the results!

15 Curriculum –Need to know their basic addition and subtraction facts through 20…10 in 1 minute! Math Concepts: Numeration, place value, critical thinking, spatial reasoning, problem solving, measurement such as time, temperature, and money, geometry, data, graphing, algebra, fractions –If your child can verbalize their thinking using math vocabulary, then they really know the concept –If only can perform, but not explain, then they may not have a solid grasp of the concept

16 Curriculum Literacy…Reading Literacy…Reading –Reading 3D –This assessment measures fluency and comprehension. A written response is expected. 3 testing times per year. –Fluency testing – 44 wpm-1 st quarter, 68 wpm-2 nd qtr., and 90 wpm by end of year –Accelerated reading…50 points by the end of second grade…about 12 points per quarter –Fluency is important but we stress strategies to enable better comprehension. Students work on higher level thinking/questioning skills to transition from LEARNING TO READ to READING TO LEARN! –Anthology stories, novel studies, skills, small/whole group, literature circles –Seminars
