5 What is nutrition? n The science or study of food and the ways in which the body uses food

6 What are nutrients? n Substances in food that provide energy or help form body tissues and are necessary for life and growth

7 How many nutrients are there? n There are 6 classes: –carbohydrates –fats –proteins –vitamins –minerals –water

8 What are carbohydrates? n A class of energy giving nutrients that include sugars, starches and fiber

9 What are fats? n A class of energy-giving nutrients that are also the main form of energy storage in the body

10 What are proteins? n A class of nutrients made up of amino acids, which are needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body

11 Why is it important to eat these nutrients? n To stay alive, healthy and growing –you must eat the right amount of each nutrient –if you eat incorrectly you can loose/gain weight, not grow properly, sometimes die

12 What happens if you eat too much fat, carbohydrates or proteins? n They are stored as fat –increases risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases and disorders n How you eat now can effect your health in the future!!!

13 Food is like what to our bodies? n Food is our fuel –food-> body –gas-> car n all the chemical processes that happen in your body to keep you alive and active is called metabolism

14 How do you measure food? n Calories = energy n Calories are NOT FAT! n CARBOHYDRATES= 4 CAL/G n PROTEIN= 4 CAL/G n FAT= 9CAL/G

15 Where can you find Carbohydrates? n Fruit n milk n cookies n potatoes –all of these contain sugars!!!!

16 Are there different types of carbohydrates? n Yes! –Simple n glucose n fructose n lactose n sucrose –Complex n starch n glycogen n fiber

17 Why is fiber important? n Isn’t used for energy n Can’t be digested n Keeps your intestines healthy, prevents constipation, and may help prevent colon cancer and heart disease n Helps trap cholesterol from food you eat (lowers blood cholesterol)

18 Isn’t fat unhealthy? n No!

19 Why do we need to eat fat? n Body needs it in order to function properly! n Adds texture, flavor and aroma to our food n Eating too much can cause: weight gain, heart disease and cancer

20 What types of fat are there? n Saturated fats: solid at room temperature –example: butter n Unsaturated fats: liquid at room temperature n Cholesterol: made by your body (liver) and animal tissues (meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products)

21 What are proteins? n Made of chains called amino acids n muscle, skin, hair, nails made mostly of protein

22 Why do we need proteins? n Needed to form hormones, enzymes, antibodies and other important molecules n if you eat too much it can be stored as fat n you need 20 different amino acids to make up body proteins

23 n 9 of the amino acids needed to make up body protein cannot be made by our bodies (essential amino acids)

24 How much do I need? n Carbohydrates –45-65% of daily calories n Fats –25-35% of daily calories n Proteins –10-35% of daily calories
