5 Fertilization AKA Conception – Union of an egg and sperm Up to half a billion sperm is released, a couple hundred make the swim, and only 1 fertilized the egg READING AGAIN

6 The Zygote United egg and sperm is called a zygote – Within 36 hours, the zygote begins to divide! TIMELINE – READING AGAIN

7 Implantation Within 4-5 days after fertilization, the zygote reaches the uterus (500 cells) – Timeline Made a change into a hollow sphere called a BLASTOCYST. When the blastocyst attaches itself to the uterine wall (IMPLANTATION) it becomes an EMBRYO. – READING

10 The Fetus Between the 3 rd and 6 th month, he or she will grow to be almost a foot long and weight 1.5 lbs. – Hair! Wrinkles? Already? Baby soccer player – Can hear sounds and see light TIMELINE Six to 9 months – Eyes open/close, gains weight, less wrinkles – Aprox 20 inches, 7.5 lbs TIMELINE – Read

11 Trimesters 1 st trimester – Morning sickness – The initial weight gain – Soreness – Bathroom frequently 2 nd trimester – Abdomen grows – Fetus starts moving – Heartburn/indigestion – Pre-milk 3 rd trimester – Gain of 25 to 35 lbs Has been up to 60 before – Baby is on a work out regiment, stretching its muscles frequently – Irregular contractions Uterus gearing up – Baby flips (usually) so the lower abdominals are hard READING

12 Emotional Changes Happiness and Worry Sympathetic pregnancy – The dad/partner feels some of the discomfort like morning sickness and frequent urination

13 PRENATAL CARE What to DO – Well balanced diet – Exercise (even when you don’t want to) – Prenatal vitamins – Regular dr visits What not to do – Drink (FAS) – Smoke – Be promiscuous – Take good care of yourself! Tests that can be had – Amniocentesis Takes some amniotic fluid to test for over 70 genetic disorders! – Chorionic villus sampling Chorion (small piece of the placenta) – Ultrasound Takes pictures of the developing fetus – Determines sex, abnormalities, age
