2 1753 George Washington sent with letter to French fort warning French to get out of the Ohio river valley French plan just opposite and build series of forts to control lands and trade. In 1754 Washington sent to build a fort and gets into battle with superior French force.

3 French and Indian War cont. Most Indians side with French The Marquis de Montcalm and Indians pummel English Braddock and others World conflict between French and English September 1758 General Wolfe defeats Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham and the English kick the French out of the new world.

5 Causes of the Revolution English Actions  Proclamation of 1763  Sugar Act 1764-active enforcement of reduced tax  Stamp Act 1765 Colonists Reactions  Anger at not being able to settle. Ignore it  Resentment of influx of tax collectors and enforcement of tax.  October 9 colonies participate in Stamp Act Congress-petition Parliament and Boycott

6 Causes Continued English Action  1766 Repealed Stamp Act-14% fall in Trade- Declatory Act-Right to Tax colonies.  1767 Townshend Duties-Writs of Assistance allow search for smuggled goods Colonist Reaction  Boycotts Caused 14% Fall in Trade English Merchants pressured for repeal of Act.  Colonies form Non- importation Agreements-Sons of Liberty force people to obey- Homespun

7 Causes English Actions  1770 England increases troops in major port cities to protect tax collectors  March 5. Off duty troops get into brawl with North End Residents Colonists Reactions  Groups of Sons of Liberty increase protests often violent including tarring and feathering.  A crowd gathers in front of the Boston Customs house insults, snowballs Boston Massacre.

8 Causes English Action  1773 Tea Act- attempt to help East India Company sell surplus.  1774 Close Port of Boston and pass Intolerable Acts as Punishment. Quebec Act Makes Canada separate from the American colonies. Colonist Reaction  December 15, Boston Tea Party.  Sons of Liberty continue agitating and stockpiling weapons.

9 Causes English Action  April 18, General Gage sends troops across the Charles river to capture store of arms at Concord and hopefully capture Sam Adams and Jon Hancock Colonists Reaction  Paul Revere and other Sons of Liberty ride through the night spreading the Alarm- The British are coming! April 19 the Shot heard round the World.
