1 HIV/AIDS Presentation
This presentation should follow the “Information – Motivation – Behavior” (IMB) Model. Participants are given information about the subject. This may include the topic (HIV), associated risks, behaviors to avoid the risks. They are then given information which motivates them to change their behavior. For example they may be given examples relevant to their demographics / level of understanding / terms of reference, etc. The desired behaviors are then provided. This is broken down into skills, it could include demonstration-performance or role plays etc, and checking that they can demonstrate the desired behaviors. Education and Outreach Team at AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan

2 What We Will Talk About How do people get sick? - Virus is one way
HIV / AIDS : how it makes us sick How do we avoid getting HIV Treating people properly and with respect Where to get help and more information Check with teacher before the start of the presentation as to how deeply to cover the topic of safe sex if it should come up.

3 What is hiv/aids? Have you ever heard someone talk about HIV/AIDS?
How many people know what HIV or AIDS is? What do you think about when you hear HIV/AIDS? Assess current knowledge and attitudes re HIV / AIDS. In this slide the presenter can simply ask for a show of hands to assess current knowledge levels of participants. For the 3rd bullet ask for some responses from participants.

4 How do people get sick What makes people sick? A virus!
VIRUS= a type of germ. They get into our bodies and make us sick Viruses need to be inside of our body to make us sick Many viruses do not survive long when outside of the body Can you name any sickness caused by a virus? Cold Chickenpox Flu HIV is one type of virus, but is very unique

5 What does hiv mean? Human Immunodeficiency Virus
The illness is spread from one person to another Immunodeficiency The illness make people sick by making our bodies weak because it attacks the immune system .This makes it easier for us to catch colds and other sicknesses Virus A germ that makes people sick. The virus germs are tricky because it can make more germs inside your body all by itself HIV is a word used that is short for a very long word. -

6 How you can CATCH Hiv? There are three main ways someone can become infected with HIV: Infected BLOOD or some bodily fluids get into your body (for example: Blood gets into a wound you have Getting infected by using dirty needles, tattooing, body piercing equipment Sharing razors, knives toothbrushes, other personal hygiene equipment) Unprotected sex Infected mothers can pass HIV when breastfeeding The number one way to become infected is through blood some bodily fluids- list. Touching someone’s blood that already has the HIV virus germs Having someone’s blood who has the HIV virus germs enter your body. For example through a cut on your skin Having unprotected sex with someone that has the HIV virus germs Can sometimes be passed from mother to baby Using dirty needles Dirty tattoo or ear/nose/belly piercing tools

7 What does hiv do? The HIV virus germs get into the blood
Makes our bodies weak by attacking our immune system Makes it easier to catch a cold or other sicknesses

8 Possibility of Transmission
Pathway Body Fluid Direct Entry Point To The Blood Activity Possibility of Transmission Mention that it needs to be a dirty/used needle Body Fluid (blood, sexual intercourse, or breast milk) + Open cuts or sores that allows infected blood to get into your blood (open cuts and sores, other mucus membranes, points of needle injection) Activity (unprotected sex, being poked by needle, mother-to-baby transmission) = Possibility of Transmission

9 ANYONE!!!! Who can get hiv? The HIV virus germs are not picky
Boys, Girls, Babies, Kids, Moms, Dads, Grandmas, and Grandpas can all get HIV But… Everyone can help stop the spread of the HIV virus germs by being healthy and by keeping yourself safe

10 How to keep yourself safe
Always be cautious Be careful when you come into contact with blood (even if they are your friends) Never pickup or touch a used needle Do not share other peoples toothbrush, nail clippers, or shaving razor Keep your own cuts covered with a Band-Aid Do not share drug supplies This presentation does not include mention of safe sex practices b/c it is provided to grade 5/6 students. If the topic comes up, check with the teacher as to whether or not to proceed in any way. At this age level the curriculum outcomes include abstinence and condom use, mentioned in a general way. The teacher SHOULD BE CONSULTED regarding the depth to which this is covered in any presentation.

11 What to do if you find blood or a needle
Needles are very dangerous – do NOT touch them Never touch a used or dirty needle because HIV or Hep C can be on or in the needle Tell an adult Can call the fire department or the Street Project (306) Do NOT touch blood unless you have rubber gloves on.

12 Ways you can’t “catch” hiv

13 HIV cannot be transmitted through:
Spit/Saliva Tears Urine Sweat Insect Bites Animal Bites Bed Sheets & Towels Dishes & Cutlery Cuddling Sneezing Coughing Toilet Sheets Food Kissing Hugging Shaking Hands

14 How is HIV different than other viruses ?
HIV The virus must be inside a person’s body in order to survive! Cannot be survive in the air or in the outside environment Does not make you sick right away Becomes less infectious in dry or cold blood

15 Progression of hiv Individual differences General steps
The virus replicates in your body and takes over certain body cells Weakening of the immune system (T-cells) Some people may exhibit signs and symptoms Opportunistic Infections AIDS Individual differences = Every person’s immune system is unique and different. Therefore, the progression on the infection will vary and the signs, symptoms, and the severity of the infections will be different for every person Once the virus enters the body after exposure with blood or other body fluids, it makes more copies of the virus within the body. The more HIV viruses that are formed in the body, the stronger the infection Once there is enough Viruses in the body, they begin in attack the immune system (The part of the body that helps fight off diseases and other infections) The more T-cells a person has, the stronger their body is at protecting itself. The lower the number, the weaker they are. HIV is hard to detect unless you get tested because the signs and symptoms are hard to define. Not all people have the same signs and the symptoms do not always occur at the same time. -The signs and symptoms are also hard to detect because they are the same as other illnesses. Once the body becomes weak enough and the immune system can’t fight off other infections, you become vulnerable for becoming infected with other infections and diseases. Other infections include: cancer, phenomena, and mouth sores When a person has been diagnosed with an OI, they can then be diagnosed with AIDS.

16 What is aids Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
AIDS is caused by HIV and is the final stage of HIV AIDS= HIV+ (+) at least one opportunistic infection

17 Is hiv/aids the same? -A person can have HIV without having AIDS, but a person can’t have AIDS without having HIV - A person CAN’T Catch AIDS. It is the final stage of HIV

18 How do you know? - You CAN’T tell is someone has HIV by looking at them. Unlike a cold or the flu, you will not see someone having a runny nose or coughing and they will not look a certain way. The only way to know for sure is TO GET TESTED!!!

19 Ways to get tested Blood test
Since HIV is found in the blood, a simple blood test needs to be done. There are a few different ways to test the blood. One takes a little longer to find out your results, the other takes 1 MINUTE and is as simple as 4 steps! It only involves a small poke and a few drops of blood.

20 Is there a cure? No. There is medicine for people that have HIV/AIDS
If you or someone you know has HIV/AIDS they can still live a full and happy life Can still go to school Have a job Have a family Have friends Play sports There is not a needle or pill that can make HIV go away forever. BUT, there is a medication that helps people control the HIV and keeps them from catching other sicknesses. Ultimately, the medication helps put the virus to sleep.

21 Where can you get tested for HIV?
Ask your family doctor (will arrange it) Ask at a walk-in medical clinic (will arrange it) APSS ( ) Planned Parenthood ( ) ID Clinic ( )

22 True and false HIV = Virus? True HIV and AIDS are the same? False
You can catch HIV from kissing someone? Blood, Vaginal fluid, Breast milk, and semen are routes for infection? You can cure HIV and AIDS?

23 True and false If you have HIV/AIDS you can’t have a relationship or a family? False If you find a dirty needle in a park you should pick it up? You can make it easier for people to get help by learning about HIV and AIDS? True

24 Why learn about hiv/aids?
By learning about HIV/AIDS we can: Help protect ourselves and people we know and love Can help stop the spread of wrong information Make people who have HIV/AIDS feel welcome, safe and comfortable Come together as a group and share our feelings and ask questions

25 Stigma Stop stigma and judgements
In 2013, 129 new people got HIV and there were about 2000 people living in Saskatchewan in 2013 who were infected with HIV People can be afraid to see a doctor or tell friends and family because people don’t want to be judged It is important to remember that we are all humans and everyone should be treated with respect even if they are sick - We are all human and we all have opinions about people and things. However, judgements or stigmas can stop people form going out and getting the help they need if they do have HIV. SO…. We want to provide a safe space for people living with HIV and tell people how important it is for people to be accepting of this illness.

26 Who can help? RQHR Doctors Nurses Hospitals Clinics APSS
