2. What is the definition of discipline? According to School Discipline Law and Legal Definition… School discipline has two main goals: (1) ensure the safety of staff and students, and (2) create an environment conducive to learning. Serious student misconduct involving violent or criminal behavior defeats these goals and often makes headlines. However, the most common discipline problems involve noncriminal student behavior. Noncriminal student behavior is subject to the disciplinary and enforcement policies of each school. A school discipline plan must conform to state and federal statutes and to district policy. State education boards are responsible for detailing school discipline rules and the consequences of breaking them are usually specified and communicated to staff, students, and parents by such means as newsletters, student assemblies, and handbooks. Schools have moved away from corporeal punishment and many now enforce a zero tolerance policy through counseling, detention, suspension, or expulsion.

3. What are your thoughts on the school system moving away from corporal punishment to implementing other means of consequences for students? Lets examine that thought… What does the word discipline derive from? Disciple What is a disciple? Here is the definition according to Webster… A disciple is a follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosopher. Therefore, discipline in the classroom should be used as a teaching moment.

6. There are three levels of infractions.  Level 1 are the infractions that interfere with an individual’s learning process and are to be typically handle within the classroom by the teacher. Stage 1 documentation should be written and parent contact made.  Level 2 are the infractions that the student is to remain in the classroom until called to the office or picked up by an administrator a Stage 2 referral should be written and parent contact made by the teacher as well as the administrator. The teacher should follow up with the Admin Team on the outcome.  Level 3 are the infractions that a student is creating a hostile or unsafe learning environment for another person or themselves. The student will be immediately removed from the classroom by an administrator. A stage 2 referral should be written and parent contact made. 7. Level 1 Infractions Teacher Manages in the Classroom The following is NOT an exhaustive list. These behaviors interfere with the individual’s learning process and are to be handled within the classroom. Talking Non–compliance (mild) No/Incomplete class or home work Disrespectful (tone/attitude) Inattentive/off task Inappropriate language (oral/written in general) Lying/cheating Electronic devices/Toys at school/cell phone incident Horse playing Hitting/pushing (without intent to harm) Spitting Dress Code Violation Stage 1 Referrals- Reminders:  Should always be documented by the teacher.  A copy of the documentation must be sent home for a parent signature and be brought back the next day. (5) stage ones can be submitted as a Stage 2 referral given if the offences did not occur on the same day by the same teacher.

9. Level 2 Infractions Administration Manages The student is to remain in the classroom until called to the office or picked up by an administrator. Communication Folder Signature Property Damage (Intentional) Cheating Communication Folder Destruction (Intentional) Extreme Non-Compliance Profanity (directed at Students) Stealing Physical Contact (Less Sever than fighting) Horesplaying (Causing an injury) Biting Inappropriate Verbal or written contact toward an adult Persistent Misbehavior (Interfering with Learning) Falsely identifying/Forging a Signature Bully 1 st Report Cell Phone (use) Stage 2 Referrals- Reminders:  Should always be documented as facts.  The documentation must be written clearly and all sections must be filled out. (Time of day, Location)  Inappropriate language can be documented if heard by an adult, please quote the child's exact words.  Know your students…Are they Spec. Ed/504/Dyslexia?  Do your students have a behavior Intervention plan in place?  Do not include on Stage 2 Referrals: Other students full names Opinions on the incident

11. Suggestions for Level 3 Infractions The Immediate Removal by Administration A student is creating a hostile or unsafe learning environment for another person or themselves. The student will be immediately removed from the classroom by an administrator. Profanity (Directed at an adult) False Fire Alarm/ Bomb threat Fighting/ extreme physical threat Possession of weapon (I.E. knife, gun, lighter) Arson Terroristic threats/Death threat/ Hit List Illegal/ look a like substance Violent Acts Towards others (Stabbing, Assaults, Etc.. ) Bulling/Harassment Fake/ Look a like weapon Level 3 Consequences Reminders:  There must be parent contact made by the teacher explaining the details leading up to the behavior and a plan must be made with the parent.

Level 3 Recommended Consequences ISS Alternative Placement (DAEP) *Elementary Students –STEP up to 10 days in a school year *Must have district permission and STEP Packet completed showing all attempts and efforts made for intervention with this student.
