1 American Culture through the Decades 1900-1909 Objectives: 1.Describe the events, literature, music, theater/film architecture, technology, and people that define this decade. 2.Explain the development of American society during this decade.

B.Policeman arrests woman for smoking in public C.$46,000,000+ in the U.S. treasury D.8,000 cars - 10 miles of paved roads E.1900 - Auto deaths 96; lynching's 115 F.San Francisco Earthquake took 700 lives and cost over $4,000,000 in damage. San Francisco Earthquake G.Average worker made $12.98/week for 59 hours H.Life expectancy: 47.3 female, 46.3 male - 33.0 blacks Now 310,815,024 estimated Americans by the U.S. Census Bureau No smoking in restaurants 143,781,202 cars - According to the Federal Highway Administration 2008 statistics, there are 2,734,102 miles of paved public roads in the United Sates Heart disease: 616,067 Current earthquake activity $7.25/hour minimum wage – U.S. Department of Labor Life expectancy: 80.8 female, 76.5 male – 73.8 Blacks

3 II.BOOKS & LITERATURE A.During this decade newspapers changed to the four-column, tabloid style paper in 1900. 1.Two newspaper magnates, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, turned producing newspapers into a war when they began adding special sections including sports 2.Yellow Journalism a.Is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact b.Distorted stories, and misleading images for the sole purpose of boosting newspaper sales and exciting public opinion

5 Assignment: 1)Form 5 groups 2)Each group will be assigned one of the books listed 3)Each group needs to create a PowerPoint for their book and author 4)PowerPoint's must contain the following information a)Information about the author b)Purpose of the book  What societal issue was made public?  How was change brought about?  What is a muckraker? c)Illustrations from the book (if any) d)How did the book change American culture? 5)Each group member must aid in researching the topic and in presenting the information to the class a)You will be teaching your classmates about your book. 6)Students will be responsible for taking notes during each presentation

7 3.Women a.wore the high, straight-front corset with long hips making the waist as small as possible. b.Garters came in during this decade c.The skirt grew shorter to accommodate stepping onto the new automobiles and trolley d.Bobbed hair made its appearance by the end of this decade. e.Hats were large. f.People were very clothes conscious and clothes were “costumy”.

HISTORIC EVENTS AND TECHNOLOGY A.The turn of the century decade began one of transition and progress and is considered the first decade of materialism and consumerism B.The Industrial age was in full swing, mass production made prices fall to all time lows. 1.Sears Roebuck 2.Montgomery Ward 3.Teddy Bears C.Safety in food processing and the environment became issues and laws were enacted D.There were hundreds of job openings for a typewriter secretary. E. Radio broadcasts and transportation, especially automobiles, ships, and trains, changed the way people viewed their world.

PEOPLE & PERSONALITIES A.Leisure time during the first decade of the twentieth century was spent at family get-togethers 1.Baseball 2.Picnics 3.Long Sunday drives in the horse and carriage (or the family car) B.Music reflected the events changing in the world outside. 1.In My Merry Oldsmobile, Come Josephine in My Flying Machine, and Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis announced the changes brought about by automobiles and airplanes. 11 C.During this decade, radios brought music to the country and in 1903 D.The hand-cranked victrola went on the market and many Americans listened to recordings of opera starshand-cranked victrola E.Broadway musicals flourished. 1.Irving Berlin and George M. Cohan opened on Broadway. 2.The Ziegfeld Follies (later, but still Ziegfeld) began in 1907. 3.The waltz was replaced with ballroom dancing
