Division of Information Technology Overview of Information Technology on Campus The Division of Information Technology (formerly the Office of Information Technology or OIT) plans, develops, supports, and maintains computing, networking, and telecommunications services for the University of Maryland community. This includes classroom instructional technology, online course management, 24-hour computing labs, email, wired and wireless network access, and the Terrapin Technology Store.

Division of Information Technology Computer Labs and Printing on Campus Information about printing on campus and instructions for printing from a personal computer to a division computer lab is available at: www.it.umd.edu/print Students can print from lab computers in most labs. Students can print from personal computers in Division of IT labs. Students can print from personal computers at other locations over the Internet and pick up their printed documents in Division of IT labs. Students use Terrapin Express account funds and their Directory ID and password to authenticate and print in labs on campus. Printing Costs: $.10 per page black and white $.50 per page color

Division of Information Technology Software Downloads via TERPware Visit www.terpware.umd.edu to log in and download.www.terpware.umd.edu Microsoft Office, Microsoft operating system upgrades, Adobe Creative Suite applications, and more! There is no cost at the time of download. The university and Adobe have an agreement that will lead to the implementation of Creative Cloud services for UMD students, faculty, and staff. The agreement is the first of its kind and creates an opportunity for the university to collaborate with Adobe on shaping this new product offering.

7. Division of Information Technology Students Should Bring These Items to Campus : Personal computer or tablet device if desired. Bring the disks that came with the computer and any software installation disks as well. Make sure the computer is equipped with anti-virus software. The Help Desk recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows and ClamXav for Apple. A working lock for the computer or device and a case. A standard Ethernet cable for wired dorm connections. These can be purchased at the Terrapin Technology Store.

8. Division of Information Technology Students Should Bring These Items to Campus : Flash drives for moving smaller files between devices. External hard drive for backups and large file storage. Printer (USB connection only; wireless printers will not work.) Many printers do not come with USB cables and you may need to purchase separately. These items, especially an Ethernet cable and external hard drive, can be invaluable when a computer starts malfunctioning or when wireless networking issues occur.

9. Division of Information Technology Preface to NEThics Advise your student(s) NOT to download copyrighted materials using the campus network. It is a direct violation of the university’s acceptable use policy to conduct illegal activity – such as online piracy – while connected to the university network. Some students have faced litigation for illicit activities. Just as important, make sure your student is aware that activities, pictures, and their general online presence is often not erasable. Employers and law enforcement continue to increase their use of online activity to make judgments and gather evidence about individuals. Think before you click Enter.

Project NEThics also responds to claims of misuse of university computing resources. Copyright infringers can be sued for statutory damages (from $750 to $30,000 or more per work infringed).
