6 Greek Period Garland makers were the flower designers of their day.
Greeks were the first to have professional florists. Garland makers were hired to make wreaths and garlands as gifts and as decorations for special occasions. This is the first record we have as floral design being recognized as a professional art.

7 Greek Period Cornucopia - Horn of Plenty
The cornucopia that we traditionally use during the Thanksgiving holiday was originally introduced during the Greek period. The Greeks placed in in an upright position with flowers, fruits, and vegetables spilling out of the top. Today we usually lay it on its side with its contents overflowing and spilling out.

8 Roman Period (28 B.C.-325 A.D.) Garlands and wreaths more elaborate than Greeks. Flowers were highly fragrant and brightly colored. Rose petals scattered lavishly during festivals We see many of the floral traditions of the Greek period overlapping into the Roman period however, these designs were usually much more elaborate and massive. The Romans preferred highly fragrant and brightly colored flowers and would lavishly scarred petals and blossoms of roses on banquet tables, streets, and lakes during festivals.

The Romans held an annual festival called The Floralia which honored the goddess, Flora, During the festival cities would be decorated in flowers, and the people would wear floral wreaths or flowers in their hair. Today, may countries, including the United State, celebrate this day which is known as May Day.
