King David – Established Jerusalem as the capital which unites all the Hebrews and from this point they are known as the Jews from the tribe of Judah. Solomon – takes over from his father (David) as King. He beautifies Jerusalem and builds the “temple”

5 New material King Solomon: The Temple was to house the Ark of the Covenant, which are what hold the Ten Commandments. One issue that Solomon faced was paying for the all the glory. The taxes needed to pay for the temple and beauty Jerusalem. This caused resentment which lead to division. After Solomon’s death, the north revolted and two Jewish states existed, Israel in the north and Judah in the south.

6 New material Following the division, at times they fought common enemies other times they fought each other, but they remained independent of one another. Assyria demanded tribute (essentially a bribe) to avoid conflict with the Jewish states. Eventually, the tribute was not enough and Assyria attacked. Israel fell first. Judah lasted for 150 years but fell to the Babylonians (stronger than the Assyrians). They captured Jerusalem and destroyed Solomon’s Temple. Many of the Jews were exiled to Babylon, hence he term.

7 New material Eventually, the Jews gained back some of their losses. Regained their freedom, re-built the Temple, re-built the walls of Jerusalem,.. But, other more powerful empires conquered their land (Persians, Greeks, then the Romans). The Flood story – Several stories of the flood exist in various versions. Each talks about ending the world through a great flood. Sometimes as a punishment for the way man has conducted himself.
