Computer & Telecom Rooms

2 Business or building protection ? BUSINESS PROTECTION  Smoke is the problem  Small and Medium Size (<200…400 m 2 )  Activation by aspirated detection  Products  DAU 20 S...  DAU 20 R…  Approvals  DAU 20 S (FM)  There is no FM, UL or VdS approved fire test protocol for DAU R room extinguishing system BUILDING PROTECTION  All sizes  Activation by detection or elevated temperature  Products  GPU Light Hazard  wet pipe  pre-action  DAU 20 S  Approvals  GPU Light Hazard  VdS (OH1)  FM (LH)  DAU 20 S (FM)

3 Smoke is the problem  Cable and plastic fires creates very large amounts of smoke in the fire  The smoke will damage the computer and telecom equipments  Burning of PVC cable will produce Hydrochloric acid vapors(HCl)  Cables, which fire resistance is improved by halogens(chlorine, bromine, fluorine, iodine) will produce acidic vapors in the fire  PTFE insulated cables will produce very corrosive fire products, if burned  Halocarbon extinguishing systems will produce acidic breakdown products, like hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the fire  The discharge of all of the extinguishing gases creates a homogenous mixture of smoke and extinguishant throughout the enclosure, reducing the visibility and making the environment more hazardous, and spreading the dust and corrosive vapors inside the computer or telecom equipments

4 Smoke Scrubbing  Hi-fog spray heads in scrubbing pipework  high velocity fog causes venturi effect  smoke sucked into pipework  water drops condense at bend  “dirty water” to drain

5 Scrubbing efficiency HCl Level without scrubbing with HI-FOG scrubbing

6 Water Effect On Equipment  Minimal water amount - 15 l / unit  De-mineralised water - same as used to clean smoke damaged computers  1st phase, heavy scrubbing and extinguishing - First 30 seconds - 10 l water/unit  2nd phase, “dry fog” - Last 8 minutes - 5 l water/unit  Start of air-conditioning quickly de-humidifies room

7 00:00 Sub-floor System  Cable or joint fire in sub-floor  1st alarm level  2nd alarm level shuts off air-conditioning  Optionally starts safe shutdown of equipment

8 00:0000:30 Sub-floor System  3rd alarm level activates HI-FOG  First 30 seconds high density fog in scrubbing pipes  Replaces hot smoke with cool air in sub-floor and cabinets

9 00:0000:3003:00 Sub-floor System  Changed to “dry fog”  Little water actually discharged in space  Extinguishes fires in sub- floor and cabinets  “Black water” in drain

10 00:00 Sub-floor & Room Extinguishing  Arson fire in waste basket  1st alarm level  2nd alarm level shuts off air-conditioning  Optionally starts safe shutdown of equipment

11 00:0000:30 Sub-floor & Room Extinguishing  3rd alarm level activates HI-FOG Sub-floor system  First 30 seconds high density fog in scrubbing pipes  Over pressurisation prevents smoke entering cabinets

12 00:0000:3005:00 Sub-floor & Room Extinguishing  Hi-fog heads on ceiling discharging into room  Sub-floor changing to “dry fog”  Over pressurisation prevents smoke entering cabinets  Extinguishes fire in sub-floor, cabinets and room

13 The HI-FOG Package  HI-FOG spray heads & mounting adapters  Smoke scrubbing pipework  Ø 100…110 mm  metal and plastic (PPS)  Stainless steel tubes, Ø12 mm  Self-contained HI-FOG Cylinder Unit(s)  No section valves  Easily replaced standard nitrogen cylinders  Designed to be used with early detection system  IRIS, Stratos, Vesda

14 Sub-floor system - DAU 20 S  For sub-floor smoke scrubbing and fire extinguishing  DAU 20 S-2-2-110  20 liter water cylinder assembly (10l+10l) - Upper cylinder 10 liters of water - Lower cylinder 7,5 liters of water  Sub-floor system  2 nitrogen cylinders  2 spray heads  Ø 110mm metal scrubbing duct

15 Sub-floor system - DAU 20 S  Design criteria by FM  max. sub-floor height 0,5 m  max. room size 5 x 10 m  25 m 3 per system  duct holes in short side  two U-loops with opposite discharge directions  Multiple systems installed back-to-back along the long side  Computer safe shut down started

16 Room extinguishing - DAU 20 R  For room fire extinguishing  DAU 20 R-3-4  20 liter water cylinder assembly(10l+10l) - Upper cylinder 10 liters of water - Lower cylinder 7,5 liters of water  Room extinguishing system  3 nitrogen cylinders  4 spray heads (ceiling mounted)  DAU 20 R-3-3  DAU 20 R-2-2  DAU 15 R-1-1

17 Room extinguishing - DAU 20 R  Design criteria  max. distance from wall 2 m, spacing 4 m  max. ceiling height 3m  max. area and volume /head 12,25m 2 and 37,5 m 3  for 3…5m ceiling heights spacing shortened based on volume protection

18 Large data and telecom centers  DAU20S for sub-floor + GPU with sprinklers for the room  Or GPU with sprinklers for sub-floor and for room

19 SMOKE is the problem Why Use Gas? If
