1 Infinitive and –ing form We use the to-infinitive: To express purpose: I woke up to take a shower After verbs such as advise, agree, appear, decide, expect, hope, offer, promise, refuse, seem, want, etc. He decided to sell his house After would prefer I would prefer to live in the country After too and enough Andrea is too casual to go to that dinner. He’s quiet enough to avoid being noticed.. We use the bare infinitive After modal verbs (can, may, should, etc) My mom can speak German After the verbs let, make, see, hear and feel : I can’t let them go! Fter would rather and had better: They’d rather eat out. She’d better study for tomorrow.

2 The –ing form We use the ing form: As a noun. Swimming is one of my favorite activities After prepositions: They apologised for being unkind After love, like, enjoy, dislike, hate and prefer to express general preference. I enjoy resting at the beach. My dog prefers taking a bath to having you around. After verbs such as consider, avoid, deny, mind, finish, fancy, admit: Joshua didn’t mind going with her to the party. After it’s no use, it’s no good, be busy, can’t help, can’t stand, look forward to, be/get used to, have difficulty in, etc, I am busy cooking for tonight.

3 Verbs taking the to-infinitive or the –ing form with a change in meaning: Remember+to-infinitive= not forget I must remember to take out the trash tomorrow Forget + to-infinitive = not remember I forgot to bring my lunch! Stop + to-infinitive = stop briefly to do sth else The horse stopped to drink some water Remember + -ing form = recall My mom will always remember her wedding day Forget + -ing form = not recall They’ll never forget having lived in Denver Stop + -ing form = finish, give up You should stop drinking so much soda!
