1 The Cell in Action Chapter 5 - section 1 & 2

2 Chapter Preview Exchange with the Environment Cell Energy

3 Exchange with the Environment section 1
NEW TERMS Diffusion Osmosis Passive Transport Active Transport Endocytosis Exocytosis OBJECTIVES Explain the process of diffusion Describe how osmosis occurs Compare and contrast passive transport and active transport Explain how large particles get into and out of cells

4 What is Diffusion DIFFUSION - is the movement of particles from an area where there concentration is high to an area where the concentration is low.

5 What is Osmosis OSMOSIS - is the diffusion of what through the cell membrane Left Pictures - A healthy red blood cell Right Picture - A red blood cell that is in pure water.

6 Moving Small Particles
Passive transport - does not require energy Active Transport - requires energy in the form of ATP

7 Moving Larger Particles
Endocytosis - the movement of large molecules into the cell using a vesicle

8 Moving Larger Particles
Exocytosis - the movement of large molecules out of the cell using a vesicle

9 Cell Energy section 2 NEW TERMS OBJECTIVE Photosynthesis
Cellular respiration Fermentation OBJECTIVE Describe the process of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Compare and contrast cellular respiration and fermentation.

10 From Sun to Cell Photosynthesis - plant cells use the energy from the sun to make food (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water using chloroplasts.

11 Getting Energy from Food (with Oxygen)
Cellular Respiration - Mitochondria will break down food (glucose) with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP)

12 Getting Energy from Food (without Oxygen)
Fermentation - the production of ATP without oxygen. 2 types In Muscles - lactic acid Yeast - alcohol
