Cellular Respiration Why is this process important to us as humans? Produces the energy for living organisms to perform all necessary functions to maintain life.
Cellular respiration occurs in two phases Cytoplasm – called glycolysis – Glucose splits into two 3 carbon molecules – A small amount of ATP is produced Mitochondria – Glucose is completely broken down – A large amount of ATP is produced – This step requires oxygen
Fermentation An alternative way to break down glucose and produce ATP. Occurs when there is no oxygen present – Example is during exercise – Lactic acid buildup in muscles Produces less ATP than cellular respiration
Fermentation Alcohol Fermentation is when yeast breaks down glucose and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide – Beer and wine production – CO 2 helps bread rise
Photosynthesis Process by which a cell captures energy from sunlight and uses it to make food. Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight = sugar + oxygen
Photosynthesis Happens in the chloroplast of plant cells
Why are plants green? Because of a pigment called chlorophyll Chlorophyll is the green pigment helps to capture the suns light. Chlorophyll absorbs all colors except green which is reflected.
