1 Picture or Paragraph Quiz
Picture: You may draw two pictures that describe the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. You must have a picture for each process and they must be labeled. OR Paragraph: You may write two paragraphs describing the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Make sure that your paragraphs specify which process you are writing about. Make sure that you include in your pictures or paragraphs the materials that are needed to start each process and the products that are a result of each process. Also make sure that you state where the processes take place.

2 Cells Capture and Release Energy Review
Ingredients/Reactants Used By Product Photosynthesis the process by which plants capture light energy from the sun and convert it into glucose CHLOROPLAST light energy carbon dioxide Water PLANTS CELLS and SOME PROTISTS glucose oxygen Cellular Respiration the process in which cells use oxygen to release energy stored in sugars MITOCHONDRIA PLANTS AND ANIMAL CELLS chemical energy carbon dioxide water Fermentation – process by which cells release energy without oxygen (occurs in the CYTOPLASM)

3 How Do Materials Move Across A Cell’s Membrane?

4 Brain Pop - Passive Transport
Passive transport - when a cell uses no energy to move particles across a membrane *diffusion & osmosis are types of passive transport *the cell is trying to maintain Homeostasis: stable internal environment (reaching equilibrium) Brain Pop - Passive Transport

5 Diffusion Diffusion - is the movement of particles from an area of
higher concentration to an area of lower concentration Molecules spread out or move from areas where there are many of them to areas where there are fewer of them in order to reach equilibrium Diffusion Animation

6 Diffusion Cells use diffusion to carry out important life functions
Oxygen needed for cellular respiration enters cells by diffusion Carbon dioxide produced by cellular respiration leaves cells by diffusion Brain Pop - Diffusion

7 Osmosis Osmosis - the diffusion of water through a membrane from a higher to a lower concentration In a cell, water always moves to reach an equal concentration on both sides of the membrane Osmosis Video Clip

8 Active Transport Brain Pop - Active Transport
Active transport: the process of using energy to move materials through a membrane from a lower to a higher concentration endocytosis & exocytosis are types of active transport (used to move particles in and out of the cell that are too large to go through the cell membrane) Brain Pop - Active Transport Cellular energy Carrier proteins Cellular energy

9 Endocytosis (Enter) Endocytosis (Enter) - is a process by
which a cell surrounds and takes in material from its environment

10 Exocytosis (Exit) Exocytosis (Exit) - is the expulsion or
secretion of materials from a cell

11 How Do Materials Move Across A Cell’s Membranes?
Passive Transport (No Energy) Active Transport (Energy) Diffusion Osmosis Endocytosis Exocytosis
