12 THE TROUBLE WITH TEXAS 1823 Mexico grants immigration to Americans if they follow the rules and become citizens. They must become Catholic. They must not bring slaves. They must learn to speak Spanish. They ignore all of that. 1836 They declare independence from Mexico.

13 THE TROUBLE WITH TEXAS 1836 The Battle of the Alamo. The Goliad Massacres. The Mexican Army ambushed at San Jacinto. 1837 Jackson offers to annex Texas. Why is that a problem? 1837 Texas petitions for annexation. Awkward. In 1845 Texas would join the Union as a slave state.

14 The Election of 1840 Martin van Buren for the Democrats The Whigs elect W.H. Harrison Heavy campaigning occurs around the country. Harrison wins. Two major changes in American Politics have now occurred: – The idea of mass voting for the most worthy was now the norm. – The Two-Party System of “platforms” which they believed in.
