Competition A.France, England, and some Native American groups started competing in the Fur Market B.This competition led to military alliances with natives joining both sides C.France and England declared war on each other to determine who would control the northern and eastern parts of North America

4 II. How it started A.English fur trappers moved into the Ohio valley around 1750 1.The French retaliated by attacking a small British settlement B.1753 Lieutenant governor of Virginia sent George Washington and a small group of men to tell the French to leave

6 III. War Begins A.George Washington builds Fort Necessity 1.French attack the fort and win B.General Braddock is defeated by French and Indian forces- 1.Washington had 2 horses shot out from under him (4 bullets through coat) 1000 die

7 IV. British take Quebec A.In 1759 the British were starting to take French forts and attacked Quebec (capital of New France) 1.In the battle of Quebec both generals (French and British) were killed 2.Quebec Surrendered B.Montreal fell the next year (Britain controlled all of Canada)

8 V. Treaty of Paris A.Treaty of Paris awarded England all the land east of the Mississippi B.France awarded Spain New Orleans and Louisiana

9 VI. Pontiacs Rebellion (Ottawa) A.British took over French forts 1.They refused to trade with the Natives B.British settlers moved across the Appalachians onto Indian territory 1.Natives attacked settlers and forts in Pontiacs Rebellion C.British invited native chiefs to talk at Fort Pitt

10 VII. Biological Warfare A.The British gave the Chiefs smallpox infected blankets at the meeting 1.Outbreak caused Indians to retreat B.Proclamation of 1763 forbade colonists from settling west of Appalachians 1.Made colonists mad because they felt they had won the right to settle Ohio R. valley 2.Britain was mad at colonists because they didn’t want to pay for their own defenses
