3  They grew corn,potatoes,wheat,and fruits  Sheep were the main source of food  Meat was added to soup and stew with vegetables  Fry bread made from wheat usually accompanied the meal

4  Circular shaped earth lodge houses that they called hogans a navajo word meaning house  A hogan had a frame of sticks and logs that were covered with mud  A hogan had 1 giant room that measured about 20 to 30 feet across  There was a smoke hole in the center of the roof

5  The entrance to each Hogan always faced east so the Navajo could pay respect to the rising sun  The Navajo built each Ramada from 4 poles and a frame  The frame was then covered with brush to provide shade

6  Horses belonged to the men, while sheep and most other possessions belonged to the women  Women spun,dyed,and wove the sheep's wool into beautiful blankets,clothing,and rugs  Women passed along their skills,traditions,and tools to their daughters  All Navajo property was past from mother to daughter  Children were raised by grandparents,aunts,uncles,and an older brother or sister

7  Men were responsible for hunting, silver work, and many ceremonial activities  Men and women participated in dry painting  Dry painting was a type of sand painting to help cure someone's illness  Dry painting was performed inside the Hogan and often took hours to make  When the ceremonies was over the painting was destroyed because it had served its purpose
