1 Welcome to Sociology Spring 2009 Ms. Rybak

2 Welcome Letter What your syllabus contains:  Course information and requirements  Day-to-Day Procedures  Movie Waiver  Parent Signature Page (Very Important!!)

3 Course Description: The course will focus on several main concepts related to the field of sociology.  Social Norms  Social Institutions (Family and Education)  Socialization Processes  Deviation  Systems of Equality  Media Influences  Research Methods

4 Course Assignments: Students will be required to actively engage in discussion and in class work. Many assignments will be individual, however, group work will be required as well. The teacher will choose some of the groups, while students will also be able to select groups from time to time.

5 Final There is NO in class final exam for this course. Instead, students will create a Final Portfolio. More information will follow for the portfolio, however, students will be given the assignment at the start of the second semester.

6 Materials Please come prepared each day to class. You will need the following materials:  Loose leaf paper  Folder or binder (your choice)  Pen/Pencil  Agenda (for passes, etc.)

7 Grades Grades will be based on class participation, homework, written assignments, presentations, and projects. Each assignment is worth a different number of points based on the intensity of the assignment. Participation in class will make up a portion of your grade. Please see me with questions or concerns.

8 Late Work All work is expected to be done on time. Late assignments will have a certain number of points deducted for each class day late (roughly 10%). Projects will not be accepted late.

9 Making Up Work If you are absent, please check the folder in the back of the room for a description of what we did in class. Next, check the box on the window sill for any worksheets that accompany the work you missed. Check with classmates if you have questions or need notes. *I will not pursue you – it is your responsibility to get your work.

10 Extra Help Monday and Wednesday 2-3pm Room 106 (Note: NOT the room where class meets).

11 Procedures Please remain seated until the bell. Try to use passing time for bathroom needs as your participation in class is crucial. Check the absence folder yourself first, then see me (after class) if you have questions.
