3 Prologue 1152, Newbury, England William Marshal is kidnapped at age six by King Stephen William’s father refuses to pay the ransom Stephen returns William to his father

4 Skill 1159, Tancarville, Normandy William goes to his cousin’s William de Tancarville to train as a knight He likes fighting, but does not like schooling.

5 Early Summer 1167 Drincourt, Normandy William is made a knight and goes off to battle where he fights bravely.

6 Courage November 1167, Le Mans, Normandy William fights in a tournament and wins money He loves “the feel of his own strength” “He loved to win”

7 Loyalty Spring 1168, Lusignan William and his Uncle Patrick are attacked while escorting the queen to a castle in Lusignan. Uncle Patrick is killed and William is kidnapped. Queen Eleanor pays a handsome ransom for William’s release. Later, William is asked “to teach the knightly arts” to Prince Henry

8 Christmas 1182 Gaen, Normandy William is accused of treason and asked to leave the prince’s household

9 June 1183, Martel, France Prince Henry asks William to return. William finds Henry sick and dying. Henry requests that William make a trip to the Holy land for him. William promises to go.

10 Service 1184, The Holy Land William fulfills his vow to Henry and leaves Henry’s robe at the shrine of the tomb of Christ. Returns to England to serve his God and his king as best he could. He is forty years old.

11 Epilogue William returns to England in 1187. Chosen to help manage the kingdom for Richard the Lionhearted while he embarked on the Third crusade to retake Jerusalem. Married the Countess of Pembroke Died at the age of 72, May 14, 1219
