3 Example: 1. Direct Speech & Indirect Speech The student said, “There are many ways of computing the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer.” The student said that there were many ways of computing the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer. → 1.

4 Example: 1. Direct Speech & Indirect Speech I asked my colleague, “Will you give up?” I asked my colleague if he would give up. → 2.2.

5 Example: 1. Direct Speech & Indirect Speech The teacher asked Bill, “Why are you late for school?” The teacher asked Bill why he was late for school. → 3.3.

6 Example: 1. Direct Speech & Indirect Speech Lisa told me, “the weather was terrible in London.” Lisa told me that the weather had been terrible in London. → 4.4.

7 Rewrite each of the following sentences by using the above pattern to change the direct speech into the indirect speech. Follow the examples. Exercise A Ann said, “I will lock the door when I leave.” 1. → Ann said that she would lock the door when she left.

8 2. 3. Jerry said, “I am going to take the afternoon off because I don't feel well.” → Jerry said that he was going to take the afternoon off because he didn't feel well. Ted asked Linda, “Can you open the window for me?” → Ted asked Linda if/whether she could open the window for him.

9 4. 5. Hamlet told his mother, “My uncle is the murderer of my father.” → Hamlet told his mother that his uncle was the murderer of his father. Kelly asked them, “Why didn't you come to the party?” → Kelly asked them why they hadn't come to the party.

10 Rewrite the following dialogues by using the pattern above. The first one has been done for you. Exercise B A: May, why didn't you come to my party? B: Sorry, Joe. Last night I went out with John. A: You what? I can't believe it. Joe asked May why she hadn't come to his party last night. May told him that she had gone out with John. Joe felt bad about it. 1. →

15 2. would rather...than... Example: His high school and college instructors preferred to teach him how to think rather than (teach him) the structure of the subject. → His high school and college instructors would rather teach him how to think than (teach him) the structure of the subject.

16 Marian is talking about individual preferences in her family. Rewrite the following sentences by using the above pattern. Follow the example. Exercise A After dinner, my father prefers to go out for a walk rather than stay home and watch TV.______________________________ 1. → After dinner, my father would rather go out for a walk than stay home and watch TV.

19 Emmy, a high school graduate, is discussing her future college life with her elder brother, Hank. Complete the dialogue on the next page with the pattern “would rather...than....” The first one has been done for you. Exercise B H: Emmy, it's time to make a final decision on which college you'll attend. Would you like to go to a public college or a private college?

20 E: It's expensive to go to a private college, so I H: OK. I think Mom will be glad about your decision. But there is no public college in our town. You'll have to go elsewhere.
