Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013 Carrie Cummings

Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013  Pearland’s DAEP  Placement is 30 days  Based on daily earned credit  Grade level classrooms  Core teachers rotate  Students remain in their seat all day, only leaving their seat for:  designated restroom breaks  Lunch  PE

Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013  60 to 70 points per day for credit  Incentives for good behavior:  10 consecutive days of earned credit allows the student to eat lunch in the cafeteria, instead of in the classroom  A perfect point sheet earns the privilege of PE after 6 th period each day  When a student wants to misbehave, a gentle reminder about keeping the privilege of PE or lunch is usually enough!

Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013

 Classroom Observations  Analysis of Observations  Program Recommendations  Staff implemented recommendations:  maintaining consistency with point sheet expectations  refusing to engage students in debate by “speak and spin”  creating a supportive yet firm classroom management approach

Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013  Foster a love of reading  Latest titles in teen and young adult literature (school- appropriate, of course)  Gifts toward the purchase of new titles each school year.  Most popular books in high school:  Percy Jackson series  The Hunger Games trilogy,  Conspiracy 365 series.  If there is a book a student is interested in, we will get our hands on it and capitalize on their interest!

Pearland ISD Copyright © 2013  For 30 minutes grade level classes are given time to reflect on aspects of great character.  We focus on the Character Counts pillars  Trustworthiness  Respect, responsibility  Fairness  Caring/Compassion  Loyalty  Citizenship  Activities/discussions for each week that focus on a single pillar, and tailored them for the high school audience.  We use video clips  Games  Friday Closure Activity  Special Events
