2 Objectives Describe some of the customs of a familiar culture. Explain the difference between an artifact and a fossil. Describe the difference between primary and secondary sources and give examples of each. Explain what types of things historians use to learn about the past. Describe American culture; how is it different from other cultures?

3 Terms and People A fossil is a part of something once alive but now turned to stone; it can also be its imprint in stone. An artifact is something someone made long ago. A Custom is a habit or usual way of doing things amongst a particular people – a tradition. How we date and marry How we celebrate How we play our games How we greet each other

5 Terms and People Primary source is something that was written at the time. Secondary Source is something that was written later. Values are ideas that people hold dear and try to live by. Our warrior culture believes in bravery, protecting the weak, personal strength, and loyalty. Our artistic culture believes in total acceptance of everyone, care of the environment, and questioning authority.
