An effect is something that happens as a result of a particular cause.

(Why does it happen?) Effect (What happens?) Climbers leave Grits on the mountain. Axel and Dag set out to rescue Grits. He thinks Grits might fall from Monkey Ledge. Axel decides to climb up and get Grits in spite of the storm. He reaches monkey ledge safely. Axel climbs carefully, using all the proper equipment. Electricity from the storm fills the air. The hair on Axel’s head and arms stands up. He free climbs the rest of the way down. Partway down the cliff, Axel runs out of rope.

27 Cause and Effect One story event often makes another event happen. One event is the cause of another event, which is the effect. What happens? (effect) Why does it happen? (cause)

Using a Multi-Flow Map, choose an important event in the story and give three actual or possible causes and effects of that event.
