A regret that: a) a present situation is not as we would like it to be b) a future situation won’t possibly be as we would like it to be : I wish I KNEW the answer (I don’t) I wish you WERE here (you aren’t) I wish they COULD COME tomorrow (but they possibly won’t)

When do we use it? 2. A regret that something happened, or didn’t happen, in the past: I wish we HADN’T GONE to the party (we went and it was boring) I wish I HAD UNDERSTOOD him before breaking up (but you didn’t, and now you’ve lost him) I WISH + Subject + HAD + participle

3. A desire for someone to change ( e.g. a complaint about their habits): I wish you WOULDN’T TAP your pencil on the table! (you do it all the time and it annoys me!) I wish they WOULD COME on time! (They are always late and it annoys me!) When do we use it? I WISH + Subject + WOULD + infinitive

common errors…and why they are wrong 1 1) I wish I would...... we don’t complain to ourselves about our own behaviour! 2) I wish he would have… … wrong tense - PAST PERFECT, not conditional, for regretting past actions. You shoud say I wish he had… (+ participle)

common errors…and why they are wrong 2 3) I wish I went to New York tomorrow... … what is the problem? - I’m NOT GOING to New York tomorrow (not ‘I don’t go...’, which is for regular or habitual actions). You should say: I wish I was going to New Yoor tomorrow or I wish I could go to New York tomorrow 4) I wish the weather is good next Sunday... for FUTURE wishes, we use ‘I HOPE’, not ‘I wish’ I hope the weather is good next Sunday
