1 Journal Format and Grading First, you MUST have a standard 100 sheet, 7 ½ x 9 ¾ composition book just for science class. No spiral bound notebooks! Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

2 Make sure your First and Last name are PRINTED clearly and always remain visible on the cover, along with teachers name and period. (also write this same information inside the front and back covers as well - along with your six-digit student ID #)

3 Scientists ( and many jobs ) require you to record data, use a checklist or keep a journal of work. Our Journal is designed to help you develop consistent recording skills by having a record of what we do each day (especially HomeWork!).

4 We use a very particular format for completing them to make it easy to find info and grade them. You copy EXACTLY what you see on the Entry PowerPoint just as it is.

5 Each sheet (two pages) is for one class. With 90 classes (1 sheet each), THIS ONE BOOK will take you through the WHOLE YEAR. DO NOT LOSE YOUR JOURNAL – its worth a LOT of points! If you do lose it, you have to Re-DO ALL of it!

6 No loose papers should EVER be in your Journal… they get LOST !! ABSENT? = copy in what was missed from Study Buddy ASAP (or get everything but answers from web site and then get answers from a Study Buddy) DONT HAVE YOUR JOURNAL? = write everything on a separate paper AND THEN… COPY ALL OF IT BACK INTO YOUR JOURNAL ASAP!!

7 On the FIRST SHEET of paper copy BIG and label the 3x5 table below: BATHROOM PASSES FOR THE YEAR You get 15 passes per year – teacher will initial a box and then you sign out as usual at the door. If you lose this sheet or use up your passes, you must borrow from someone. So use the bathroom during Passing Time (these passes save for emergencies only!) JWP Teacher will initial page – you only get one!

8 Now skip 5 sheets and then on this NEW SHEET (which is on the right side of the book) write a big 1 in the top margin to show this is Class # 1 Then go to the next NEW SHEET (right side again) and write a big 2… and so on until you get to 90.

9 Your Journal must always be brought to class, up-to-date, in sequence and complete – REGARDLESS if youre absent (all but the answers are on web site). Journals CAN BE COLLECTED / GRADED ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTICE Late Journals (being 40 pts) can be done LATE but only for 60% maximum. Keep them up-to-date and on-hand and this should be an easy A for everyone. OVER 86% OF IT DONE IN CLASS !!

11 CLASS # 1 02 SEP 2009 Entry Question: copy it (skip a space) My Answer: attempt an answer using whats in your head ONLY A: notes taken during the debrief on the correct answer (whether you were correct or not) THIS IS THE ANSWER YOU STUDY FOR TESTS Each new class starts on the RIGHT hand side of a new sheet and should look like this. Draw a thick line to separate the two parts. Make a box with Class # and date (front of RIGHT page – beginning of class)

12 WHY DO WE USE THAT weird Military DATING SYSTEM ? When you use all numbers (like 8/11/13) it can get confusing. In the U.S. that is August 11 th of But in the rest of the world, it is the 8 th of November 2013 (which makes more sense going from small unit to large unit – not mixed up like the U.S. system). Military dates avoid the confusion by using a 3-letter abbreviation for the month. Example: 08 NOV 2013 (they also add the leading 0 so you know a 1 or 2 isnt missing) Computers now are starting to name their files with all numbers, but starting with the biggest thing (year) then working towards the smaller month and finally day. This way files sort themselves automatically by name.

13 Heres some common examples of better dating format being used *notice they use 24 hour time too (theres 24 hours in a day right?!) bottom of a Burger King bag no doubt at all when it was made its all here – obvious date and 24 hour time – no confusion at all bag of dried fruit expiration date – no doubt all, or time Sometimes how we are taught to do something isnt always the BEST way to do it. Think Critically !

15 This is the back page for that days class where you: RECORD HOMEWORK and DUE DATES FOR EACH HW in (…) COPY THE EXIT QUESTION and THEN WRITE ANSWER WHEN TEACHER GIVES IT TO YOU (finish for HW if not done in class). (back LEFT page – end of class) __________________________ Exit Question: Why are pre- assessments in a new class important ? (skip a space) Answer: This way teachers will know what skills are being brought to the new course and how to teach better during the coming year. Students and parents will also know how well the student is progressing in their skills and if additional help is needed. HW (due): 1. Questionnaire HW (10 pts, due next class) 2. Intro PPT HW (30 pts, due 30 / 31 OCT)

19 GRADING A JOURNAL District goals are for you to EVALUATE work so you will grade your own Journal the first time, and after that other students will grade it. But your teacher will check your grading for accuracy. If you are off a lot in your grading, there will be a HEAVY penalty. Grading is very specific, so follow the rules.

If no credit, put a 0 in a circle. 1
