There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches Response: Steinbeck creates an image of a path through trees that is worn down because people have walked on it. Response: Through the use of willows and among the sycamores Steinbeck creates the image of a calm and peaceful path that is protected by trees. Steinbeck juxtaposes this with the metaphor beaten which makes the path seem worn and damaged as well as busy and boisterous because of all the boys from the ranches.
