What is Ha referring to here? Look at the cover illustration of the book. What images do you notice on the cover of the book?

2 Reread “Papaya Tree” on pages 8 and 9
Reread “Papaya Tree” on pages 8 and 9. As you read, try to determine the gist of the poem. In a minute, after rereading, you will work with a partner to write down the gist on a piece of paper. You will turn in one piece of paper for the two of you. Yes, this will be graded.

3 Reread pages 10 – 21 of the text.
Quick Write: How is Ha’s life affected by where and when she is living? Write a complete paragraph in which you support your ideas with evidence from the text. You may use your text and any notes to help you write this paragraph. A complete paragraph will meet all criteria: - Answer the prompt completely - Provide relevant and complete evidence - Paragraph includes the following: - a focus statement (claim) - at least three pieces of specific evidence from the text - for each piece of evidence, an analysis or explanation: what does this evidence mean? (hint: think interpretation) - a concluding sentence (states your point in a new way)

4 Homework: Read pages 22 – 47, from “Unknown Father” through “Promises.” Keep noticing what the critical incidents and key details are helping us learn about Ha and her character/personality.
