3 What are the Similarities and Differences between the Response to Literature standards? 8 th grade 2.2 Write responses to literature: a. Demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the significant ideas of literary works. b. Support important ideas and viewpoints through accurate and detailed references to the text or to other works. c. Demonstrate awareness of the author's use of stylistic devices and an appreciation of the effects created. d. Identify and assess the impact of perceived ambiguities, nuances, and complexities within the text. 2.2 Write responses to literature: a. Exhibit careful reading and insight in their interpretations. b. Connect the student’s own responses to the writer’s techniques and to specific textual references. c. Draw supported inferences about the effects of a literary work on its audience. d. 8 Remember… Your thesis establishes the order you will discuss each element! Each paragraph should have a… –topic sentence – tell me what you are talking about. –Evidence with examples (quotes, examples, comparisons, etc…). –Clincher- reminding us what you are proving about that element and tying it back to the thesis of your paper.
