After thorough review and recommendations by the Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission, the Maryland State Fire Marshals Office has entered into an agreement with Best Buys to permit use of the Maverick Bars within the following guidelines: After thorough review and recommendations by the Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission, the Maryland State Fire Marshals Office has entered into an agreement with Best Buys to permit use of the Maverick Bars within the following guidelines: Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars Exterior forced entry techniques: Ingress through doors with advanced security arrangements require properly trained and equipped personnel. Without an appropriately equipped, well-trained and adequately staffed truck or squad company, access through adjacent horizontal or vertical openings may be more effective and timely. Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars There may be occasions, however, which dictate the need to force entry through such doors. Examples include: a lack of adjacent or appropriately located openings or entry points; the need for a specific, controlled horizontal ventilation point; or the possibility of civilian or firefighter rescue. Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars All you Truckies, wake up and pay attention! Personnel may be able to identify doors with permanently added security features through familiarization and a quick examination of the exterior of the door. Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars Note that this door is a steel, outward swinging door with case hardened steel hinges.

Maverick Bars Note that this door is a steel, outward swinging door with case hardened steel hinges. It lacks the presence of an exterior keyset (deadbolt) or a doorknob/handle.

Maverick Bars Note that a steel plate has been welded over the latch side of the door jamb.

Maverick Bars Note that a steel plate has been welded over the latch side of the door jamb. Also, note the presence of the four rectangular steel braces.

Maverick Bars Obviously, traditional through- the-lock entry techniques cannot be performed on this door arrangement. Note: Best Buys Annapolis has over 15 perimeter doors with this arrangement present.

Maverick Bars Standard methods of entry would be to force the door with irons and hydraulic tools or to utilize a K-12 circular saw with a metal cutting blade to conduct a sideways V cut over the lock assembly. Both of these methods are inappropriate for doors equipped with Maverick Bars. Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars One method of entry, which is both time consuming and labor intensive, is to dissect both Maverick Bars and the locking panic hardware.

Maverick Bars Using a K-12 circular saw with metal cutting blades, the objective is to cut in half the steel carriage bolts.

Maverick Bars Using a K-12 circular saw with metal cutting blades, the objective is to cut in half the steel carriage bolts. ExteriorInterior CUT

Maverick Bars The remaining shaft of the bolt must then be driven through to the interior, thereby freeing the door bracket. ExteriorInterior

Maverick Bars Once done, the interior panic lockset must still be bypassed or disabled. A sideways V cut over the locking assembly would then be required to complete access.

Maverick Bars The quickest, easiest, and recommended method of forced entry is as follows: Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division Code Enforcement Bureau

Maverick Bars Using a K-12 circular saw with a metal cutting blade, conduct a horizontal long-triangle cut, ensuring that all portions of the doors security features are accessible to manually release.

Maverick Bars Conduct a horizontal long- triangle cut, ensuring that all portions of the doors security features are accessible to manually release. (ie: top bar, panic hardware, bottom bar)

Maverick Bars ExteriorInterior

Maverick Bars Once the cut is completed and the door skins are removed, reach in and: 1. Lift up the top bar and remove, 2. Lift up the bottom bar and remove, 3. Pull/activate the panic bar. 1 2 3

Maverick Bars Other alternatives may also include bypassing the doors and breaching the CMU exterior wall with irons, sledgehammers, and/or K-12 saws equipped with masonry blades.

Maverick Bars Closing: As of this date, Best Buys is the only organization that has entered into agreement with the State and County Fire Marshals Offices. As such, Best Buys are the only facilities in Anne Arundel County permitted to use this supplemental locking arrangement. 65 Maverick Bars Closing: Although the devices are very simple in nature and operation, it is strongly recommended that companies, including those that may be called to conduct firefighter rapid intervention operations, make field visits to the respective facilities to further their familiarization with these unique locking arrangements.
