2 Introduction Young animal nutrition at Nuscience is based on two pillars: FEED INTAKE as much as possible as early as possible YAN at Nuscience ANIMAL HEALTH as strong as possible immunity: quality >> quantity

3 Young Animals Piglets

4 Maximum performance In practice “MAXIMUM” performance of young piglets is highly desirable Maximum feed intake Maximum health Maximum growth WHY ?

5 Maximum performance Weaned piglets with “MAXIMUM” performance
- cope better with post-weaning stress - are less susceptible to diseases - adjust better to solid starter diets - require less expensive starter diets “MAXIMUM “ performance is hardly achievable in commercially raised piglets - high litter sizes => lower birth weights - often insufficient quantity of sow milk - weaning at early age - intestinal physiology is not fully developed (digestion and absorption of nutrients) - many stress factors around weaning But …

6 Determining factors Weaning weight
The impact of weaning weight on final slaughter weight Weight (kg) Weaning Slaughterhouse (Model according to Wolters and Ellis ; Binnendijk et al.,) Estimation : a difference of 1 kg weaning weight → a difference of 5-7 kg slaughter weight or ± 5 days sooner to slaughterhouse

7 Determining factors Feed intake
In young piglets growth responds linearly to feed intake: To increase feed intake well balanced, well digestible and palatable (pre)starter diets are advised

8 Determining factors Feed intake
Intake of solid creep feed before weaning enhances villi development A larger surface results in a higher absorption capacity for nutrients Less undigested nutrients available for fermentation by pathogens at colon level

9 Determining factors Weaning weight Advice ? Cost ?
Weaning weight and/or growth 1st week after weaning have a tremendous effect on subsequent performance and final slaughter weight Advice ? Create a smooth transition from suckling to weaning with well balanced, well digestible and palatable prestarter diets → extra supply of well digestible protein, fat and carbohydrates next to the sow milk → heavier piglets at weaning (= increased body fat reserves more mature digestive system) → piglets cope better with weaning stress factors → increased post-weaning performance !!! Cost ? Cost price of ± € 0.50 / piglet => € 2 -3 extra yield at the end

11 Babito Application Product : Creep feed in meal form for newborn piglets Use : birth day w – 7 days weaning BABITO Always supply clean drinking water next to Babito Mix in the beginning 1/3 of Babito with 2/3 of water to help the piglets to adapt to the solid creep feed When feed intake is high enough, switch to a Nuscience prestarter (Crespina or Safina) or mix with a Vitapops based starter feed

12 Babito Product characteristics Why Babito ?
High content of fats suitable for newborn piglets High content of highly digestible proteins / immunoglobulins High content of palatable and functional feed ingredients High content of heat treated cereals Why Babito ? More vital piglets / lower mortality rate Piglets are better prepared to weaning / no delay in growth around weaning Obviously more uniform litters at weaning and afterwards A higher weight at weaning (0.5 kg) and higher post-weaning performance

13 Babito Why Babito ? More uniform litters at weaning and afterwards
A higher weaning weight and higher post-weaning performance

14 PALATABILITY / FEED INTAKE
Summary PALATABILITY / FEED INTAKE HEALTH Nuscience concept FARROWING HOUSE WEANING PIGLET NURSERY

15 Health supporting raw materials
Focus on health supporting raw materials Organic acids Etheric oils Medium chain fatty acids Probiotics Prebiotics Enzymes

16 Health supporting raw materials
Focus on health supporting raw materials The aim of the Nuscience health concept for young piglets Regulation of the intestinal microflora (pathogenic bacteria ↓ + stimulating good bacteria) Lowering the infection pressure in the intestine Optimalisation of the intestinal health Improving the general health status of the animal General improvement of the animal performance
