3 Subject A subject is a NOUN or PRONOUN that the sentence is about. In the sentence: “Mr. Rogers is an awesome writing teacher.” Mr. Rogers is the SUBJECT.

4 What is the Subject? Luis won yesterday’s race. In the morning, we will have a test. Why is the sky so blue today?

5 VERB A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being (to be).

6 What is the VERB? Ron threw the ball over the fence. Forever is a long, long time. She just munched and munched. Why do I have to know this stuff?

7 PREDICATE The part of the sentence that contains the VERB is known as the Predicate. A PREDICATE may be just the verb or it may contain other words and phrases.

8 SIMPLE SENTENCES A simple sentence contains a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE and make a complete thought. SIMPLE SENTENCES are INDEPENDENT CLAUSES

9 INDEPENDENT CLAUSES An INDEPENDENT CLAUSE contains a SUBJECT, a VERB and a complete thought.
