1. 1 Ceilings Ceilings have an average height of 8 feet. Newer homes often have 10 – 12 feet ceilings. The added height lends a feeling of dignity.

2. 2 To make a ceiling appear higher: extend the paint or wallpaper a short distance onto the ceiling hang wallpaper with vertical lines use diagonal beams to draw the eyes upwards add a skylight

5. 5 To make a ceiling appear lower: extend the ceiling color down a little bit below the top of the wall.

6. 6 To make a ceiling appear lower: paint the ceiling a dark color or use a patterned material.

7. 7 Other ways to make the ceiling appear to be lower: Use horizontal lines in the wallpaper, furniture and windows/window treatments Use wood ceilings and horizontal beams, particularly dark colored woods

8. 8 Acoustic Ceiling Tiles absorb sound and hide stained or cracked ceilings. These tiles are attached by installing them on suspended metal grids or gluing the tiles directly to the old ceiling.

9. 9 Ceiling Treatments There are many different ceiling treatments. The next 12 slides will identify the 10 most commonly used and popular ceilings.

10. 10 Cathedral ceiling Tall and raised to the ridge line

11. 11 Tray vs. dropped ceilings A portion of the main ceiling is raised or lowered above the natural plane of the ceiling for visual interest.

12. 12 Exposed beams emphasize the room’s length.

13. 13 Suspended ceilings have metal tracks suspended that form 2x2 or 2x4 foot grid patters. These areas are filled with tiles. Tiles come in various colors patterns and materials. Foil backed tiles reduce heating and air conditioning costs.

15. 15 Sculpted ceilings are sometimes freeform designs that add interest and perhaps entertainment. The ceiling can be a highly dramatic focal point.

17. 17 Coffered ceilings have wooden members in a grid manner with molding and decorative panels

18. 18 Gabled ceilings have expanded space that reaches to the ridge line.

19. 19 Pyramid ceilings direct the eyes upward to the crest.

20. 20 Vaulted or arched ceilings have curved lines

21. 21 Domed ceilings Domed ceilings expand the space upwards but focus attention on the center of the space.

22. 22 Shed or single slope ceilings Lead the eye upwards.
