1 Chapter 5 Lesson 3 French and Indian War

2 Q1 French Trade  France continued its fur trade well into North America.  Both England and France made alliances with Native American fur traders.  European wars between France and England would find their way to North America.

3 Q2 The Ohio River Valley  British settlers moved into the Ohio River Valley, upsetting French fur traders.  For the French, the Ohio Valley area was important to the economic security in North America.  For the British, the Ohio Valley was a natural area for continued expansion.

4 Q3 Preparing for War  A group of wealthy Virginians secured land rights to the Ohio Valley.  The French were building a chain of forts to protect against the British colonists.  George Washington is sent by the governor of Virginia to secure the land claims.

5 Q4The Start of War  Washington takes a group of 150 men to the Ohio Valley.  The Virginians shoot first and a French leader is killed.  A French reinforcement captures Washington, but lets him go.  The French and Indian War is soon underway.

6 Q5 A Global Conflict  The French and Indian War was global, essentially fought on seven seas.  The victor-England or France would emerge as THE power in North America.  Eventually, France’s concern with European battles would lead to defeat in North America.

8 Q6 A Tough Beginning  The colonists were far from unified, leading to the British decision to send troops.  General Edward Braddock marched into the Ohio Valley only to be soundly defeated.  Braddock’s defeat would shock the colonists and lead to questions about the British military.

9 Q7 Battle of Quebec  William Pitt took over the British military in North America with great success.  The British are able to surround Quebec at night, a French stronghold.  The loss of Quebec would be the turning point of the war, as Montreal fell next.

10 Q8 The Treaty of Paris  Spain tried to enter the war to help France, but it was far too late.  The Treaty of Paris redrew North America:  A) England gets all territory east of Mississippi River  B) England trades Cuba and Philippines for Florida  C) French no longer power in North America

11 Q 9 Proclamation of 1763  The British take over French forts, causing conflicts with Native Americans.  The Native Americans attack English settlers, who used diseases to attack back.  The Proclamation of 1763 forbids colonists to settle in the Ohio River Valley; start of colonial anger towards British.
