6 ECONOMY  Subsistence Farming- growing only enough food to survive.  Timber and Ship Building Supplies (Rope, Masts, Tar)  Dried Fish  Rum and other Manufactured Trade Goods PEOPLE  Puritans and Pilgrims who believed in working hard and following strict rules.  Merchants (people who trade/sell goods), Manufacturers, and Lawyers. New England Culture

9  Puritans: wanted to purify, or reform, the Anglican Church – Landed and established Massachusetts Bay Colony. Left seeking religious freedom.  Pilgrims: wanted to separate from Anglican Church. – Some left England to escape persecution. – Signed the Mayflower Compact (legal document saying that they would have fair laws) and landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts in late 1620. New England Settlements

11 Middle Colonies Environment  Good land for farming  Medium growing season and cold winters.  Many lakes and rivers for transportation.

13 ECONOMY  Called the Bread Colonies  Farmed Wheat, Oat, Barley and Rye  Made homespun products- homemade (clothes, furniture)  Traded very little  Self sufficient- do not rely on anyone else for their needs. PEOPLE  People from: England, the Netherlands, France, Germany and others  Puritans, Quakers, Anglicans, Catholics, and Jews  Indentured Servants: People who are brought to the colonies and must work to pay off the trip. 16  Many different nations settled in the Middle Colonies including: – Dutch who founded New York – New Jersey who had Dutch, Swedes, Finns, and Scots.  William Penn formed Pennsylvania which was a Quaker, or Society of Friends, colony. – He promised religious freedom to all. 20 Southern Colonies Culture ECONOMY  Farmed Tobacco, Rice, Indigo, and cotton.  Traded cash crops (crops that are grown in large amounts and sold for profits) farmed on plantations (large commercial farms ).  Purchased manufactured goods.

21 Southern Colonies Culture PEOPLE  Anglicans  Plantation Owners, Indentured Servants, Transported Criminals, and Slaves (people captured in Africa and sold to plantation owners- they were property)

24 Southern Colonies Settlements  Settled in Jamestown, Virginia- first permanent English settlement in America. – Two-thirds died by their first winter – John Smith was leader 1608. Pocahontas married settler John Rolfe which helped form peaceful relations with the Powhatan.  The Carolina’s and Georgia were settled for economic opportunities.
