Motivations for Colonization Review

What are Joint-stock companies ?  Company which has sold parts of their ownership to individuals outside of the company  People who buy shares are called “investors”  Investors make money when the company makes a profits  Example: Virginia Company (founded Jamestown)

Virginia Colony  Charter colony  What is a charter?  A document that granted the right to form a colony. Power granted by the king.

Why were Joint-stock companies formed?  No one person would have to put all of the money in to support a colony.  Unlimited money can be raised this way.

Why would people move? Economic Profit/Opportunity: Trade growing, creating a stronger middle class Surplus Population: Overcrowding encouraged people to leave for the new world and a chance at a better life Religious freedom: Religious groups were being persecuted

Religious Freedom New England:  Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson – Rhode Island  John Winthrop – Massachusetts Bay Colony  Thomas Hooker – Connecticut  William Bradford – leader of Pilgrims. Founded Plymouth Pennsylvania  William Penn – Quakers Maryland Lord Baltimore – Religious toleration

Economic Opportunity  Virginia  Virginia Company  New York  Originally a Dutch colony known as “New Amsterdam”

Surplus Population  Georgia - James Oglethorpe  Created for debtors/criminals

Jamestown  Founded in 1607 on the James River  Benefit: Gave them access to the ocean  Disadvantage: Water source was salty – not good for consumption  Primary Purpose: To find gold

Jamestown Survival  John Smith helped Jamestown survive  “If you don’t work, you don’t eat”  Powhatan tribe helped Jamestown and provided food  Pocahontas acted as a liaison between colonists and Indians

Jamestown Struggles  The winter of 1609-1610 was known as the starving time  After this winter, Jamestown discovered tobacco which became the “savior” of the colony  John Rolfe found a method to cure and store tobacco

After Jamestown  As Virginia grew, more and more workers were needed to grow tobacco.  Indentured servants came to the colonies and worked for several years in exchange for their passage  Starting in 1619, slaves were brought to the Jamestown Colony  Slaves were purchased for life and their children belonged to their master.  Easy to track down if they tried to escape.

Colonial Independence  Virginia House of Burgesses was founded and allowed colonists to elect representatives  Women started arriving in 1619 and helped the colony be able to grow families and gain stability

Colonial Unrest  In 1675, Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion of backcountry farmers against the royal governor and plantation aristocrats of the Tidewater.  He believed indentured servants in the backcountry had to fight off Native Americans with no help.  He thought the richer colonists had too much influence in colonial politics and that the Virginia House of Burgesses helped plantation owners and ignored the small farmers of the backcountry.
